If the automatic Audi Q5 (8R, 2008–2017) has a flat battery or an electrical fault, the gear selector can jam in P and the car won’t roll — for example to push it onto a trailer. There is a manual release hidden under the gear-selector surround.
How to Release the Q5 Gear Selector from Park
- Apply the parking brake or chock the wheels — the car can roll once the lock is released.
- Switch the ignition on if there is any power (not essential for the mechanical release).
- Lift out the ashtray/storage insert ahead of the selector, then remove the small cover underneath to expose the release.
- Insert a screwdriver into the release opening and press it in the direction shown on the trim.
- With the catch held, move the selector out of P. The car can now be moved.
- Refit the cover and the ashtray housing when you’re done.
Before You Start
- Only release Park once the wheels are chocked or the handbrake is firmly applied — on a slope the car will move.
- If the battery is simply flat, charging or jump-starting it usually restores normal selector operation without the manual release.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why won’t my Q5 come out of Park?
The shift-lock is electric; with no power (flat battery) or a fault it stays locked. The manual release under the ashtray lets you move the lever so the car can be pushed or trailered.
Is it safe to do this myself?
Yes, provided the car is secured first. Chock the wheels or set the handbrake before releasing, because the transmission no longer holds the car.
