Reinitialise the Electric Sunroof

These instructions apply to the BMW 1 Series Mk2 (F20/F21) 2011-2019. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

If the electric sunroof on your BMW 1 Series (F20/F21, 2011–2019) has stopped opening or closing properly, stops part-way, or lost its one-touch function, the roof controller needs re-initialising. It usually happens after the battery is disconnected or goes flat, after a fuse is pulled, or if the roof was forced. The fix is a quick relearn you can do yourself with the roof switch, no tools.

Why the Sunroof Loses Its Calibration

The roof module stores its end positions so it can run automatically and stop if it meets resistance (anti-trap). A power loss clears those references, so until you re-teach them the roof only moves while you hold the switch. This is one of the follow-up steps in the F20 battery procedure.

Before You Start

  • Turn the ignition on — do not start the engine.
  • Make sure the battery is fully charged.
  • The BMW procedure works best at a moderate ambient temperature (around 18–28 °C) and out of direct sunlight.
  • Keep hands and objects clear of the opening — the anti-trap protection is off during the relearn.

How to Re-initialise the F20 Sunroof

  1. Turn the ignition on (engine off).
  2. Press the roof switch to the maximum tilt-up position and press and hold it.
  3. Keep holding for about 30 seconds — the roof runs an automatic cycle (slide close → slide open → slide close) to relearn its end stops.
  4. Release the switch when the roof has finished moving, then check the one-touch open, close and tilt.

The 30-second hold at the tilt position is the key step; release too early and the relearn will not store.

If the Sunroof Still Won’t Auto-Operate

  • You released the switch too soon: repeat and hold to the tilt position the full 30 seconds.
  • Weak battery: charge it and try again — the BMW relearn is fussy about voltage.
  • Too hot/cold: try again at a moderate temperature out of direct sun.
  • Just did a battery job: expected — see our F20 battery disconnect/reconnect guide.
  • Roof leaking or slow: clear the sunroof drain channels before relying on the relearn.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a diagnostic tool to reset the F20 sunroof?

No — the relearn is done entirely with the roof switch as described.

Why does temperature matter?

BMW specifies a moderate temperature range for the relearn because the roof seals behave differently in extreme heat or cold, which can upset the calibration.

Why did the sunroof stop working after I changed the battery?

The roof module loses its references during a power loss. Run the relearn and full function returns.

Is the anti-trap working during the relearn?

No — keep hands and objects clear of the opening while teaching the end stops.

If you also lost the windows after a power cut, see our F20 electric window guide, or clear a reminder with the BMW 1 Series F20 service indicator reset guide.
