Check the Engine Oil Level

There’s no dipstick under the bonnet of your BMW 2 Series (G42, 2021–present) — you check the engine oil electronically through the iDrive display. If you’ve lifted the bonnet expecting a bright plastic loop to pull out and found nothing, that’s completely normal for this generation: the measurement now happens through the car’s own instruments rather than a physical stick. Why No Dipstick

The dipstick has been replaced with an electronic oil-level sensor in the sump. Instead of you dipping and wiping a stick, the sensor continuously watches how much oil is sitting in the pan and the car works the level out for you, then presents it as a bar or scale on the display. The trade-off is that an electronic sensor only reads correctly under the conditions it was calibrated for: the oil has to be warm enough to have thinned out, the car has to be sitting flat so the pool in the sump is even, and the engine has to have been running so the level has stabilised. Get any of those wrong and the gauge will still show a number — it just won’t be a trustworthy one. That’s why the same car can read differently morning and afternoon, and why the on-screen prompt matters more than a quick glance.

First, a Few Checks

• Park on level ground — a slope tips the oil in the sump and skews the reading.
• Bring the engine to normal operating temperature before you trust the number; a cold check is unreliable.
• Have the car running or the ignition fully on as the on-screen prompt directs, not just in accessory mode.
• Give it a moment — the electronic gauge needs time to take and settle its measurement.
• Have the correct BMW-approved Longlife oil to hand if you expect to top up, plus a funnel to avoid spills.

Checking the Level

1. Park on level ground with the engine at normal operating temperature.
2. With the engine idling (or as the on-screen prompt directs), open iDrive → Vehicle / Vehicle status → Oil level.
3. Let the gauge complete its measurement — it takes a short while to settle.
4. Read the bar/scale: top of the band is full, bottom means top-up needed.

Topping Up

Add oil a little at a time via the filler cap, re-measuring between additions — the gap between minimum and maximum is only about a litre, so it’s easy to overfill. Add a small amount, let the reading settle again, and repeat rather than pouring in a full bottle in one go. Don’t exceed the maximum: overfilling can foam the oil and stress the seals, which is as bad as running low.

If the Reading Won’t Settle

• Check the car is genuinely level — even a mild driveway camber shifts the number.
• Make sure the engine is properly warm, not just started; cold oil reads short.
• If the display says it’s still measuring, wait it out rather than reading mid-cycle.
• Re-check under the same warm, level, idling conditions each time so you’re comparing like with like.
• A persistent low reading after topping up to max, or a warning that stays lit, is worth having looked at — it can point to consumption or a sensor fault rather than a genuine shortfall.

After Topping Up

Once the gauge shows full, wipe any spill off the engine, refit the filler cap firmly and take the car for a short drive. Re-check the level the next time it’s warm and level to confirm it’s holding and you didn’t overshoot.
