Disable the Auto Start-Stop System

Auto Start-Stop (MSA) on the BMW X5 (F15, 2013–2019) shuts the engine off at a standstill to save fuel. You can switch it off with a single button, but it turns itself back on every time you restart the car.

How to Turn Off Auto Start-Stop on a BMW X5 (F15)

  1. With the engine running, find the MSA button (an “A” inside a circular arrow) near the start button or on the center console.
  2. Press it once. The dash confirms start-stop is off and the engine will no longer cut out at stops.
  3. To turn it back on, press the button again (or simply restart the car).

Why It Comes Back On

Auto Start-Stop defaults to “on” at every engine start, so the button is a per-drive toggle, not a permanent setting. There is no owner menu to make “off” stick; a permanent change needs BMW coding (e.g. an enthusiast tool), which is optional and reversible.

The system also won’t stop the engine on its own if the battery charge is low, the cabin isn’t yet at temperature, or the car is on a slope — that’s normal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my X5 start-stop keep turning back on?

It resets to “on” at every start by design. The button is a per-drive toggle.

Can I disable it permanently?

Not from the car’s menus. A BMW coding change can make it default to off, and it’s reversible.

Why won’t the engine stop at lights?

Start-Stop only acts when conditions are met — battery charged, engine/cabin warm, level ground. Otherwise it stays dormant, by design.

If a start-stop or battery charge warning appears, look up the code on autodtcs.com.
