Disconnect and Reconnect the Battery

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 12, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Chevrolet Tahoe (K2XX) 2015-2020.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Before electrical work on a 2015–2020 Chevrolet Tahoe you disconnect the 12 V battery, negative first. This is the US-market procedure, the same as on the Suburban.

  1. Ignition off, key out, doors closed briefly. Eye protection on.
  2. Open the hood; the battery is under the hood, on the passenger side at the rear of the engine compartment.
  3. Remove the negative (−, black) cable first, then the positive (+, red).
  4. Do your work. Reconnect positive first, negative last and tighten both.
  5. Switch on, check for lights, re-set the clock and presets.

FAQ

Where exactly is the battery?

Under the hood, passenger side, rear of the engine bay — not under a seat or the floor. If your Tahoe has the dual-battery option, use the main (passenger-side) battery, not the driver-side auxiliary.

Which cable first?

Negative off first, negative on last.

Is an AGM battery required?

No — these K2XX SUVs have no Stop/Start, so a standard maintenance-free battery is correct.

If your Tahoe stores a fault code with the warning light, look it up on autodtcs.com.
