The Citroen C4 Mk2 (2010–2018) uses an electronic parking brake (EPB). If the 12 V battery is flat or the EPB will not release electrically, the car carries a tool in its kit to release the brake by hand so you can recover it.
This is an emergency release only. For a brake-pad change the EPB must be put into service mode with a diagnostic tool — do not use this method for routine servicing.
How to release the Citroen C4 electronic parking brake in an emergency
- Chock the wheels and select first gear (or Park) — once released the car can roll freely.
- If you can, connect an auxiliary power source or jump pack; a charged battery is best even for the manual release.
- Open the boot and lift out the luggage-compartment carpet, then the storage tray, to reach the tool kit.
- Take out the EPB release tool and remove the access plug.
- Fit the tool and turn it clockwise to wind the parking brake off.
Because the car is now free to move, keep it chocked or in gear until you are ready. Once power is restored, have the EPB checked and reset properly — the release should then work normally from the switch.
Frequently asked questions
My Citroen C4 parking brake won’t release — what’s wrong?
The most common cause is a flat or weak 12 V battery, since the EPB is electrically operated. Charge or jump the battery first; if it still won’t release, use the emergency tool above.
Can I change the rear pads using this?
No. Pad renewal needs the EPB put into service mode with a diagnostic tool so the caliper motors wind back — the manual release is for recovery only.
If an EPB or brake warning light stays on, you can look up the stored fault code on autodtcs.com.
