The Cupra Ateca (2018/2020–present) is the 300 PS performance flagship spun off from the SEAT Ateca, and like the rest of the VW Group MQB range it comes with a single keyless smart fob (KESSY) — the chunky black remote with the copper Cupra tribal badge and a pull-out emergency blade tucked in the base. There is no folding flip-key variant here; every Cupra Ateca left the factory with keyless entry and go as standard. When that fob starts needing you to stand right next to the car, or throws a battery-low warning in the driver display, the fix is almost always a fresh coin cell. How to Tell the Fob Battery Is Dying
- Shrinking range. You have to be within a metre of the car — or hold the fob against the door handle — before it locks or unlocks. This is the first and most reliable symptom.
- A “Key battery low” message. The Cupra’s digital cockpit shows a low-key-battery warning in the instrument display when the fob voltage drops. On a healthy cell the button reads around 3.2–3.3 volts; owners typically see the warning once it sags toward the low-3-volt mark.
- Keyless entry gets unreliable. Because the Ateca uses KESSY, a weak cell can make the door handles stop sensing the fob in your pocket long before the buttons themselves quit.
- Cold-morning dropouts. A near-flat lithium cell loses punch in the cold, so intermittent winter behaviour that clears up when warm is a classic sign the battery is on its way out.

The Battery You Need

Buy a good branded cell (Panasonic, Duracell, Varta, Sony): cheap no-name cells sag under the brief high current the transmitter draws and can give poor range even straight out of the packet. You only need one.

Method — Opening the Cupra Ateca Smart Fob
- Release the emergency blade. Slide the small catch on the back of the fob and pull the metal emergency key straight out of the base. This is the mechanical blade that unlocks the driver’s door if the car battery is ever flat.
- Pop the rear cover off. The SEAT/Cupra owner’s manual method is to use the tip of that emergency blade as a lever: slot it into the gap the blade left and gently prise the back cover away from the fob. Working from the inside like this puts the load on the strong edge rather than the small plastic tabs, so it is far less likely to crack the case than clawing at the seam with a fingernail.
- Lift out the old cell. The CR2032 sits in a shallow holder under a retaining clip. Note which way up it lies before you remove it — on these VAG fobs the positive (+) face points up toward the cover you just took off. Ease the clip aside and slide the cell out.
- Fit the new CR2032. Drop the fresh cell in the same way round as the one you removed (positive side up), pressing it fully under the clip so it sits flat on the contacts. Handle it by the edges — finger grease on the flat faces can weaken the contact.
- Click the cover back on and refit the blade. Line up the rear cover and press it home until the tabs snap, then slide the emergency key back into its slot until it latches.
⚠️ Match the polarity. A CR2032 fitted upside down will not power the transmitter, and an inverted cell can also discharge itself — so the single most important step is to copy the exact orientation of the cell you took out. When in doubt, the printed “CR2032” and + marking face outward toward the cover.
Did It Work?
Stand back a few metres and lock, then unlock, the car with the buttons. Full range should return straight away. Walk up to the handles to confirm keyless entry is sensing the fob again. The “Key battery low” message clears once the car has read a healthy fob — sometimes instantly, sometimes after the next start cycle.
If a Fresh Cell Doesn’t Fix It
- Re-check orientation and seating. An upside-down or half-seated cell is by far the most common cause of a “dead after new battery” fob. Make sure it is flat under the clip against clean contacts.
- Wipe the terminals. A little corrosion or grease on the holder contacts is enough to cause dropouts — clean them with a dry cloth or a cotton bud.
- Try the other, deeper reasons. If the remote’s range still will not recover with a known-good branded cell, the transmitter itself may have failed, or the receiver in the car may need attention — both are rare compared with a simple flat or inverted cell.
- Rule out the car’s own battery. A weak 12 V starter battery can mimic key faults by making the car slow to wake and recognise the fob; if the Ateca has been standing or is cranking lazily, have the main battery tested.
New Key or Spare — Why It’s a Dealer Job
Changing the coin cell keeps all of the fob’s existing coding, so a battery swap needs no reprogramming — the key works the moment the cover clicks shut. A new key is a different story. The Cupra Ateca’s immobiliser and keyless system have to be matched to the car with VW Group diagnostic equipment, and blank fobs are ordered against the vehicle’s VIN and component-protection data. That makes cutting and coding a replacement or adding a spare a job for a Cupra dealer or a properly equipped auto-locksmith. The cheap insurance is to keep the spare key’s battery fresh too, so you are never down to a single working fob.
