On the 2011–2023 Dodge Charger — the four-door that shares its bones with police fleets — the 12 V battery sits in the trunk, not the engine bay. Disconnect it negative-first, and remember it’s a vented battery that must be swapped like-for-like. This is the US-market procedure.
- Switch the ignition off, take the key out, put on eye protection.
- Open the trunk and lift the access cover over the battery (under the trunk floor or side trim).
- Take the negative (−, black) cable off first, then the positive (+, red).
- On the way back, fit positive first, negative last. Leave the battery’s vent hose connected, and replace only with a vented battery of the same rating.
- Reset the clock and radio afterward.
FAQ
I opened the hood and can’t find the battery.
It isn’t there — the Charger’s battery is in the trunk under an access cover. The under-hood terminals are remote posts for jump-starting only.
Why does it have a vent hose?
Because the battery lives inside the cabin’s luggage area, the hose vents its gases outside. Never remove it, and never fit a non-vented battery — it’s a safety issue.
Negative or positive first?
Negative off first, negative on last.
The Charger shares its LX platform, drivetrains and these procedures with the two-door Dodge Challenger.
If your Charger stores a fault code with the warning light, decode it on autodtcs.com.
