Reset the Oil Life

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated September 27, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Ford F-150 Mk13 (P552) 2015-2020.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

The 13th-generation Ford F-150 (P552, 2015–2020) runs an Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor and shows an Oil Change Required (or Change Engine Oil Soon) message when a service is due. After you change the oil and filter, you clear it yourself from the instrument-cluster productivity screen — no scan tool needed. This is the US-market procedure.

On the 2015-2020 F-150 the reset lives in the productivity screen (Settings > Vehicle > Oil Life Reset, highlighted here) – navigate with the left steering-wheel arrows and hold OK. US-market truck shown; illustrative frame.
  1. Switch the ignition to ON without starting the engine — on push-button trucks press START/STOP once without the brake; with a key, turn it to RUN.
  2. Using the arrow buttons on the left side of the steering wheel, scroll the instrument-cluster productivity screen to the Settings menu.
  3. Open Settings, then select Vehicle (on some trims this is Info → Vehicle).
  4. Select Oil Life.
  5. Press and hold OK until the oil life resets to 100% and a confirmation appears.
  6. Switch the ignition off. The Oil Change Required message will no longer appear at start-up.

Trim / screen note: the menu path is the same across the range — XL has a 2.3 in productivity screen, XLT a 4 in, and Lariat and above an 8 in screen. On the 8 in SYNC 3 cluster you can also reset by holding Reset under Settings → Vehicle → Oil Life.

FAQ

My F-150 has no pedal-dance method — is that right?

Correct. Every P552 F-150 (2015–2020) resets through the productivity screen with the left steering-wheel controls. There is no accelerator/brake pedal sequence on this generation.

Does resetting the oil life change the oil?

No. It only resets the monitor. Reset it after the oil and filter have actually been changed, or the truck will under-report the next service.

It says “Change Engine Oil Soon” instead of “Oil Change Required” — same reset?

Yes. Both messages clear with the same Oil Life reset above.

How often does the F-150 ask for an oil change?

The Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor works on driving conditions rather than a fixed mileage — typically around 7,500–10,000 miles, but it can appear sooner under towing, short trips or dusty conditions.

If your F-150 also shows an engine warning light alongside the oil message, look the fault code up on autodtcs.com before you clear anything.
