Turn Off Auto Start-Stop

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated September 30, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Ford Kuga Mk2 (C520) 2013-2019.

The Ford Kuga Mk2 (2013–2019) switches the engine off at idle to save fuel. You can turn Auto-Start-Stop off for a drive with a single button — it simply comes back on the next time you start the car.

How to turn off Auto-Start-Stop on a Kuga Mk2

  1. With the ignition on, find the Auto-Start-Stop button on the instrument panel — an “A” encircled by a rotating arrow.
  2. Press the button once. A message and an indicator in the display confirm the system is now off.
  3. The engine will stay running when you stop for the rest of the drive.
  4. To switch it back on, press the button again — or it re-enables automatically the next time you start the car.

It is normal for Start-Stop not to trigger when the engine is cold, the battery charge is low, the cabin is heating or cooling hard, or you are on a steep slope — the system decides when conditions suit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Auto-Start-Stop stay off permanently?

No — it re-enables at every ignition cycle, so press the button each time you want it off for that drive.

Why doesn’t the engine stop at the lights anyway?

A cold engine, low battery charge, strong climate-control demand or a gradient can all suspend the function.

Is disabling it bad for the car?

No. Turning it off simply keeps the engine idling; the starter and battery are designed for frequent restarts, and leaving it off does no harm.

If a Start-Stop or charging warning appears, you can look up the code on autodtcs.com.
