Disconnecting the 12 V battery on your Genesis GV70 (JK1, 2020–2024) — for a new battery, winter storage, or work near the airbags — is straightforward once you know it lives in the boot, not under the bonnet.
Find the Battery First
The 12 V battery is in the luggage compartment (boot), under the trim. Note your radio presets and user settings before you start.
Disconnecting Safely
- Turn the ignition off and make sure all electrical consumers are off.
- Expose the battery in the boot and disconnect the negative (−) terminal first, then the positive.
- Working near airbags or seat-belt pretensioners? Wait a few minutes after disconnecting.
Reconnecting and Re-initialising
Reconnect positive first, then negative. The GV70 then needs a few items relearned:
- Power windows — re-initialise one-touch (see our window initialisation guide).
- Powered tailgate and sunroof may need re-initialising on first use.
- Tyre pressure monitor — drive to re-store the pressures.
- Re-enter the clock and presets.
If Something Isn’t Right Afterwards
- Warning lights often clear after a short drive.
- A persistent light stores a code — look it up on autodtcs.com.
- Fit a like-for-like battery — the correct type and rating for the car’s electronics.

To relearn the windows, see our GV70 power-window guide. If a warning light stays on, decode it on autodtcs.com.
