On the 2019-and-later GMC Sierra 1500 (T1XX) the service countdown shows as CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON in the driver display. It’s the GM Oil Life System, and after an oil and filter change you return it to 100% from the steering wheel — the fourth-gen Sierra shares this with the Silverado, from the SLE through the AT4 and Denali.
- Engine off, ignition ON/RUN. Bring the Remaining Oil Life percentage up in the driver display.
- Press and hold the steering-wheel thumbwheel (or the trip-odometer stem on trucks without DIC controls) for several seconds.
- When the display asks to confirm, choose YES. The oil life resets to 100%.
Accelerator-pedal alternative
- Ignition ON/RUN, engine off, Remaining Oil Life shown.
- Floor the accelerator slowly three times within five seconds.
- 100% on the display confirms it.
If the message comes straight back or the figure sits near 0%, it didn’t take — repeat.
FAQ
Thumbwheel or Set/Reset button?
The T1XX Sierra uses the steering-wheel thumbwheel with a YES confirmation — a change from the earlier K2XX truck’s ✓ button.
Which oil?
A dexos1 full synthetic: 5W-30 for the 2.7L turbo and 4.3L V6, 0W-20 for the 5.3L and 6.2L V8. The four and V6 hold 6.0 qt, the V8s 8.0 qt.
Does Duramax diesel differ?
The 3.0L Duramax uses its own oil spec and interval (see its supplement), but the reset method through the driver display is the same.
Reminder vs warning?
CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON is the service reset here; a red oil-pressure warning is a stop-now alert.
The GMC Sierra 1500 is mechanically identical to the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, so this procedure is the same on both trucks — see our Chevrolet Silverado 1500 guides.
If your Sierra logs a trouble code with the warning light, decode it on autodtcs.com.
