Disconnect and Reconnect the Battery

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 12, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Honda Civic Mk7 (ES/EP) 2001-2005.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Before electrical work on a 2001–2005 Honda Civic you disconnect the 12 V battery, negative first. Be ready with your radio code, which you’ll need afterward. This is the US-market procedure.

  1. Ignition off, key out, eye protection on.
  2. Open the hood; the battery is in the engine compartment on the passenger side.
  3. Loosen and remove the negative (−, black) cable first, then the positive (+, red).
  4. Reconnect positive first, negative last.
  5. Re-enter the radio security code, reset the clock, and allow a few days’ driving for the engine to relearn its idle.

FAQ

Will I need the radio code?

Yes — disconnecting the battery locks the audio system until you enter the 5-digit code from your owner’s card.

Which cable first?

Negative off first, negative on last.

Why does it drive differently at first?

The engine relearns its idle and fuel trims over a few days after a disconnect.

If your Civic stores a fault code with the warning light, look it up on autodtcs.com.
