Reset the Maintenance Required Light

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 12, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Honda Civic Mk7 (ES/EP) 2001-2005.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

The 2001–2005 Honda Civic predates Maintenance Minder — it has a simple mileage-based Maintenance Required light you reset with the Select/Reset knob after a service. This is the US-market procedure.

  1. Turn the engine off.
  2. Press and hold the Select/Reset knob in the instrument panel, then turn the ignition to ON (II).
  3. Keep holding for about ten seconds until the Maintenance Required light goes out, then release.

FAQ

When should I reset it?

Only after the scheduled service is done. The light comes on around 10,000 miles after a reset (and flashes as a pre-warning from about 8,000).

Is this the same as the oil light?

No — the Maintenance Required light is a mileage reminder. A red oil-pressure light is a stop-now warning.

Nothing happens when I hold the knob.

Make sure the engine is off first, then hold the knob while turning the ignition to ON and keep holding ~10 seconds.

If your Civic stores a fault code with the warning light, look it up on autodtcs.com.
