If the gear selector on an Opel Zafira B becomes locked in P (Park), an emergency release procedure can be used to move the selector out of Park. This method applies to both automatic and semi-automatic transmissions and allows the vehicle to be moved safely when normal shifting is not possible.
When This Procedure Is Needed
- The gear lever is stuck in the P position.
- The vehicle cannot be shifted into Neutral.
- An electrical fault or discharged battery prevents normal operation.
Emergency Park Release Procedure
- Apply the parking brake firmly or block the wheels to prevent the vehicle from rolling.
- Remove the ashtray from the centre console.

- Locate the manual park release mechanism underneath the ashtray opening.
- Use a suitable tool to access the release.
- Pull the manual release cable.

- While holding the release, move the gear selector out of P (Park).
- Once the selector has moved, release the cable.
- Reinstall the ashtray.
Additional Information
- This procedure applies to both automatic and semi-automatic Opel Zafira B transmissions.
- The emergency release is intended for temporary use only.
- If the selector frequently locks in Park, the shift-lock system should be inspected.
- This method allows the vehicle to be moved or loaded for recovery.
