Disconnect and Reconnect the 12V Battery

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated August 27, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Hyundai Getz Mk1 (TB) 2002-2005.

Disconnecting the 12V battery on the 2002–2005 Hyundai Getz (TB) is straightforward: this early Getz has no ECU throttle relearn, no window reset and no steering-angle setup. All you lose is the clock time and your radio presets, both easily restored afterwards.

Before you start

  • The 12V lead-acid battery sits in the engine bay at the front, on the right-hand side.
  • Note down your radio station presets first if you don’t know them by heart.
  • A jump-start uses this same engine-bay battery, so the terminals below are the ones you connect to.
  • Have a spanner (usually 10 mm) ready for the terminal clamp nuts.
  1. Switch the ignition off and remove the key. Make sure the lights and any accessories are off.
  2. Open the bonnet and locate the battery in the engine bay. Identify the negative (−) and positive (+) terminals; the positive usually wears a red cover.
  3. Loosen the clamp nut on the negative (−) terminal first and lift the negative cable clear of the post. Tuck it aside so it cannot spring back onto the terminal.
  4. Loosen the positive (+) clamp nut and remove the positive cable. The battery is now safely disconnected for maintenance or replacement.
  5. To reconnect, fit the positive (+) cable first and tighten its clamp, then fit the negative (−) cable and tighten. Reversing the removal order this way avoids accidental short circuits.
  6. Get into the car, switch the ignition on and reset the clock using the H (hour) and M (minute) buttons on the cluster or radio.
  7. Re-store your radio station presets. Nothing else needs re-doing on this Getz, so your job is finished.

FAQ

Will the Getz need any throttle or ECU relearn after reconnecting?

No. The 2002–2005 Getz TB has a cable or simple electronic throttle setup that does not require a relearn procedure. Once the battery is back on, start the engine and drive normally; there is no idle-relearn step for an owner to perform.

Do the windows need re-initialising after a battery disconnect?

No. This early Getz does not have one-touch auto-up windows, so there is no window initialisation to carry out. The windows work exactly as before once power is restored.

I reconnected the battery but the clock is wrong — is something faulty?

That is normal. Disconnecting the battery always clears the clock and radio memory on the Getz. Simply reset the time with the H and M buttons and re-enter your presets; it is not a fault.
