Replace a Headlight Bulb

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 8, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Hyundai i20 Mk2 (GB) 2014-2020.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

The Hyundai i20 Mk2 (GB, 2014–2020) uses halogen headlight bulbs on most trims, and they change from the engine bay in a few minutes. Standard reflector headlights use a single twin-filament H4 bulb (60/55 W) that does both main and dipped beam; projector-headlight trims use a 55 W H7 dipped-beam bulb.

How to replace a halogen headlight bulb on a Hyundai i20

  1. Switch the lights and ignition off and open the hood.
  2. At the back of the headlight, lift off the rubber cover and unplug the wiring connector.
  3. Release the wire retaining spring (or twist the bulb holder anticlockwise) and withdraw the bulb.
  4. Fit the new bulb, holding it by the metal base only — never touch the glass.
  5. Clip the retaining spring back (or turn the holder clockwise to lock), refit the rubber cover and push the connector back on.
  6. Test dipped and main beam, and check the aim against a wall.

Oil from your fingers on the glass creates a hot spot that shortens a halogen bulb’s life, so wipe a new bulb with alcohol if you touch it by accident. It’s worth replacing bulbs in pairs so both sides match in brightness.

Which bulbs does the i20 use?

From Hyundai’s own wattage table for the Mk2 (GB):

  • Headlight (main/dipped): H4 60/55 W twin-filament, or 55 W (H7) on projector trims
  • Front turn signal: 21 W
  • Front position / parking light: 5 W or LED
  • Daytime running light (DRL): 35 W or LED
  • Front fog light: 35 W
  • Rear brake / tail light: 21/5 W
  • Rear turn signal: 21 W
  • Reversing light: 21 W
  • Rear fog light: 21 W
  • Number-plate light: 5 W

Side repeaters and some tail-light elements are LED on higher trims and aren’t separately replaceable — check what’s fitted to your car before buying bulbs.

Frequently asked questions

What headlight bulb does a Hyundai i20 take?
On standard halogen cars, a single H4 (60/55 W) twin-filament bulb per side for both beams; projector-headlight trims use a 55 W H7 dipped-beam bulb.

Do I need to remove the bumper to change an i20 headlight bulb?
No. The bulbs are reached from behind the headlight in the engine bay.

Why shouldn’t I touch the glass of the new bulb?
Skin oils leave a residue that overheats and weakens the glass, shortening the bulb’s life. Handle it by the metal base, or clean it with alcohol if touched.
