Replace the Key Fob Battery

These instructions apply to the Hyundai i30 Mk2 (GD) 2012-2017. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 6, 2026

If the remote on your Hyundai i30 Mk2 (GD, 2012–2017) has lost its range or stopped locking the car, the coin cell inside the key has almost certainly run flat. It is a quick swap with a small screwdriver. This guide covers the change for both the folding key and the plain remote, and explains why a brand-new key needs a dealer.

Battery First

Both i30 GD key types use a CR2032 coin cell, fitted positive (+) side up. A weak cell is behind nearly every “i30 remote not working” case — short range, repeated presses, or no response — so fit a fresh one before suspecting the car.

Replacing the Fob Battery

Type 1 — folding key (with flip-out blade):

  1. Pull out the mechanical key blade.
  2. Separate the two halves of the case with a small screwdriver at the seam.
  3. Lift out the old cell and fit a new CR2032, positive side up.
  4. Refit the cases and the key blade, then test.

Type 2 — standard remote (no blade):

  1. Separate the cases with a screwdriver.
  2. Fit a new CR2032, positive side up.
  3. Refit the cases and check the remote locks and unlocks.

Lost Key or Adding a Spare

A simple cell swap keeps the existing coding. Programming a new key goes through the immobiliser and needs Hyundai’s diagnostic tool, so adding or replacing a key is a dealer or auto-locksmith job — there is no owner sequence.

If a Fresh Cell Doesn’t Help

  • Confirm the cell is positive-up and seated firmly — the usual reason a swap fails.
  • Clean the contacts and avoid touching the circuit board.
  • Still nothing? A receiver or body-control fault may log a code — look it up on autodtcs.com.

Frequently Asked Questions

What battery does the i30 Mk2 key use?

A CR2032 coin cell, fitted positive-side up — the same for the folding key and the standard remote.

Do I need to reprogram the key after the swap?

No — coding is retained; only a new key needs programming.

Can I program a new i30 key myself?

No — it requires Hyundai’s diagnostic tool, so it’s a dealer or locksmith job.

Does this apply to the i30 estate (Tourer)?

Yes — the GD hatch, Tourer and three-door share the same key and CR2032 cell.

If the remote dropped out after a battery disconnection, see our i30 Mk2 battery disconnect/reconnect guide.
