Replace the Engine Air Filter

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 7, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Hyundai i40 Mk1 (VF) 2011-2019.

The engine air filter on the Hyundai i40 (VF, 2011–2019) lives in the airbox on top of the engine. A clogged element chokes the engine and hurts economy. Swapping it is a quick clip-off job that needs no tools.

How to Replace the i40 Engine Air Filter

  1. Undo the clips holding the air cleaner cover and lift the cover up.
  2. Lift out the old filter element.
  3. Wipe any dust or leaves out of the airbox, taking care that nothing falls into the air intake.
  4. Drop the new element in the same way up, seated in its groove.
  5. Close the cover and refasten all the clips.

Important Notes

Use a genuine or good-quality filter — debris or the wrong element can damage the air-flow sensor, or the turbocharger on the 1.7 CRDi diesel. Never drive with the filter removed, as this causes excessive engine wear.

Replace the element on the service schedule (roughly every 45,000 km, or more often in dusty conditions). Between changes you can tap out loose dust or blow it through gently with compressed air.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the petrol and diesel airbox the same?

The location and clip-off method are the same across the i40 range; only the element part number differs by engine.

Can I just clean the old filter?

You can tap out loose debris to tide it over, but a clogged or oily element should be replaced, not washed.
