Home/Hyundai/Tucson/Mk3 (TL) 2015-2020/Reset a Frozen Infotainment Screen

Reset a Frozen Infotainment Screen

These instructions apply to the Hyundai Tucson Mk3 (TL) 2015-2020. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 10, 2026

When the infotainment screen in your Hyundai Tucson Mk3 (TL, 2015–2020) freezes — navigation stuck, taps ignored, or a black display while the audio plays on — you can reboot it yourself in seconds without losing any settings. The TL Tucson used Hyundai’s 5-inch, 7-inch or 8-inch Display Audio / AVN navigation units across its run, and all of them restart the same way.

The Infotainment System in This Tucson

Base TL Tucsons had a small audio screen; mid and upper trims got the 7-inch or 8-inch Display Audio, with built-in AVN navigation on the top spec. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (wired) arrived on this car from around the 2017 model year via a software update. The Power / Volume knob beside the screen is the reboot control.

Soft Reset (No Data Loss)

  1. Leave the ignition on (engine running or ACC).
  2. Press and hold the Power / Volume knob for about 5–10 seconds until the screen blanks.
  3. The Hyundai logo reappears as the unit restarts — release and wait for the home screen.

If your Tucson’s unit has a small RESET pinhole on the faceplate near the knob, press it briefly with a paperclip or pen tip for the same reboot.

This Is Safe — Nothing Is Erased

A reboot only restarts the software. Paired phones, radio presets, saved navigation destinations and your display settings all stay put.

If It Stays Frozen

  • Unplug the USB cable feeding CarPlay/Android Auto — a worn cable often locks the projection screen.
  • Switch the ignition off, lock the car, wait 2–3 minutes, then restart.
  • Update the Display Audio / navigation software from update.hyundai.com via USB — the TL Tucson got the update that both added phone projection and cured several freeze bugs.
  • If it still won’t clear, disconnect the 12 V battery for ~15 minutes — see our Tucson Mk3 battery guide.

Factory Reset (Erases Your Data)

Only for persistent faults: tap Setup / Settings → General → Reset (or “Factory Reset”) and confirm. This returns the unit to showroom state — paired devices, presets, saved destinations and preferences are all deleted — so reserve it for when a reboot won’t hold.

Frequently Asked Questions

My TL Tucson never had CarPlay — can I add it?

From roughly the 2017 model year, the Display Audio update from Hyundai enables wired CarPlay/Android Auto. Earlier units may not support it — check your unit’s eligibility on update.hyundai.com.

Will the knob-hold erase my sat-nav favourites?

No. Only a factory reset removes saved destinations; the reboot keeps everything.

Where is the reset button on the Tucson Mk3?

It is the Power / Volume knob — hold it about 10 seconds. Some units also have a small reset pinhole near the knob.

The reversing camera freezes with the screen — same fix?

Yes. The camera feed runs through the same head unit, so a reboot restores it.

Black screen but the radio still plays — is it broken?

Almost never. That is the standard soft-reset case; hold the Power knob for 10 seconds.

If a warning light appeared alongside the glitch, look up the code on autodtcs.com.
