If the power tailgate on your Hyundai Tucson Mk3 (TL, 2015–2020) has stopped opening or closing automatically, stops part-way, or beeps and reverses, the tailgate controller has usually lost its calibration. It most often happens after the battery is disconnected or goes flat, after a fuse is pulled, or after the tailgate has been operated manually while powered off. Re-initialising it takes under a minute, with no tools.
Why the Power Tailgate Stops Working
The powered tailgate stores its fully-open and fully-closed positions, and the resistance it should feel along the way (so it can stop if it meets an obstacle). When power is lost, those references are cleared as a safety measure, so the tailgate will not run automatically until you re-teach it.
Before You Start
- Make sure the battery is well charged.
- Park on level ground with room to open the tailgate fully.
- Keep hands and objects clear of the tailgate edge during the relearn — the anti-trap protection is being taught.
How to Re-initialise the Tucson Power Tailgate
- Put the gear lever in P (automatic) or select neutral (manual).
- On the inside edge of the tailgate, press and hold the two tailgate buttons (close and lock) together for about 3 seconds.
- An audible signal sounds — release both buttons.
- Close the tailgate manually. The procedure is complete.
- Test the power open/close from the key, the dash button and the tailgate button.
If the Tailgate Still Won’t Auto-Operate
- You didn’t hold the buttons long enough: repeat and hold both for the full 3 seconds until the signal sounds.
- Weak battery: the powered tailgate needs a healthy battery; charge it and try again.
- Obstruction or worn struts: a heavy or binding tailgate (tired gas struts) can make it stop or reverse — check the struts.
- Just did a battery job: expected — see our Tucson battery disconnect/reconnect guide.
- Still nothing: a tailgate-module fault may be stored — check the code on autodtcs.com.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did my Tucson power tailgate stop working after the battery was off?
It loses its open/close calibration during a power loss. Re-initialise it with the two-button hold and it returns.
Do I need a diagnostic tool?
No — the relearn is done with the tailgate’s own buttons as described.
Which buttons do I hold?
The close and lock buttons on the inside edge of the tailgate — hold both together for about 3 seconds until the signal sounds.
The tailgate opens but won’t close (or reverses) — why?
Usually tired gas struts or an obstruction making the system think it has hit something. Check the struts and clear the opening, then relearn.
If you also lost the sunroof or windows after a power cut, see our Tucson sunroof guide. To clear a service reminder, see the Tucson service indicator reset guide.
