These instructions apply to the Jaguar E-Pace Mk1 (X540) 2017-Present.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

If the touchscreen in your Jaguar E-Pace (X540, 2017–Present) has frozen, gone black, started resetting on its own, or stopped responding to touch while audio carries on, you can force a clean restart yourself from the driver’s seat — no tools and no garage trip.

How to force a soft reset of the Jaguar E-Pace Mk1 infotainment screen without losing your saved settings.

Which system is in your E-Pace

The X540 spans both of Jaguar’s recent infotainment families, so check which one you have:

  • InControl Touch Pro on 2017–2020 cars — the screen with the spinning-globe boot animation. Freeze-prone, with random crashes that improve markedly on the latest software.
  • Pivi Pro on the 2021 facelift onward — the cleaner, faster system that updates over the air. More stable, though owners of 2021-on cars have still reported an occasional Pivi Pro black-screen glitch.

Both reboot by holding a physical control, not by tapping the screen — but the control differs by year.

Soft reset (reboot) the screen

Do this parked, ignition on so the system keeps power.

  1. Cars with a centre volume knob (Touch Pro and most Pivi Pro): press and hold the volume/on-off knob for about 20–30 seconds, straight through the mute, until the screen goes black and the Jaguar logo reappears, then release.
  2. Late cars without a centre volume knob (2024-on Pivi Pro): press and hold the phone button on the steering wheel for about 15–20 seconds until the screen blacks out and the logo appears.
  3. Either way, wait 30–60 seconds for the home screen to reload. Touch, audio and navigation should respond again.

It is the equivalent of restarting a phone — a hung process is cleared and the display reloads.

Will this erase anything? No

The hold-to-reboot is safe. It does not delete radio presets, navigation favourites, paired phones, your profile or any settings. The screen just powers down and reloads. Repeat as often as you need.

If the screen stays frozen

  • Hold longer. If one cycle doesn’t take, keep holding until the logo has come and gone twice before releasing.
  • Let it sleep fully. Switch off, lock with the fob and walk away for at least 7 minutes so the electronics power down, then unlock and restart.
  • Check for updates. Pivi Pro updates over the air (the 4.x software series brought stability fixes); Touch Pro cars need a dealer flash. The black-screen glitch on early Pivi Pro cars is improved, though not fully eliminated, by the latest software.
  • Test a paired phone. A bad Bluetooth or CarPlay link can hang the head unit — delete and re-pair, or disconnect to test.

Factory reset (erases data)

On InControl Touch Pro E-Paces there is no owner-accessible factory reset — the full data wipe (software IMC S20A) is a dealer Pathfinder/TOPIx job. On Pivi Pro you can erase data yourself under Settings → All settings via the profile/reset options, then remove the car from your account at the My InControl website. A factory reset clears presets, pairings and personal data, so reserve it for selling the car.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my E-Pace has Touch Pro or Pivi Pro?

2017–2020 cars have InControl Touch Pro with the spinning-globe start-up; the 2021 facelift onward has Pivi Pro, which boots fast and updates over the air. The reboot is a knob-hold on both, except the very latest knob-less cars, which use the steering-wheel phone button.

My 2022 E-Pace Pivi Pro screen goes black at random — is that known?

Yes, some 2021-on E-Paces have shown an intermittent Pivi Pro black-screen glitch. The volume-knob reboot recovers it, and over-the-air software updates have reduced how often it appears.

Will I lose my settings if I reboot the E-Pace?

No. The hold-to-reboot keeps every preset, favourite, profile and paired phone. Only a deliberate factory reset clears them.

There is no volume knob in my E-Pace — how do I reboot?

On the latest knob-less Pivi Pro cars, hold the phone button on the steering wheel for about 15–20 seconds until the screen blacks out and the Jaguar logo appears.

Can I keep driving with the E-Pace screen frozen?

Yes. The infotainment is separate from the drivetrain — you only lose audio and navigation. Reboot when safely parked.

If a warning light or message stays on the dash after the reboot, the car may have logged a diagnostic trouble code — you can look it up on autodtcs.com.
