Home/Jeep/Compass/Mk2 (MP) 2017-Present/Replace the Key Fob Battery

Replace the Key Fob Battery

These instructions apply to the Jeep Compass Mk2 (MP) 2017-Present. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 6, 2026

A Jeep Compass (MP, 2017–present) remote that only works up close or has stopped responding almost always just needs a fresh coin cell. It’s a quick swap once you slide the emergency key out. Here’s the job, and why a brand-new key is a dealer matter.

Battery First

The Compass fob uses a CR2032 coin cell. A weak cell is behind nearly every unreliable-remote complaint, so fit a fresh one before suspecting the car. The fob carries a pull-out mechanical key that unlocks the driver’s door if the remote is flat.

Replacing the Fob Battery

  1. Slide out the emergency (mechanical) key from the fob.
  2. Open the cover with a small screwdriver at the seam.
  3. Lift out the old CR2032 and fit the new cell the same way round.
  4. Close the cover, refit the mechanical key, and test lock/unlock.

Lost Key or Adding a Spare

A battery swap keeps the existing coding. A lost or broken key can only be ordered from a Jeep dealer and coded with a diagnostic tool — there’s no owner sequence to program a new transponder.

If a Fresh Cell Doesn’t Help

  • Check polarity and the contacts — the usual reason a swap doesn’t take.
  • Keyless Compass? Hold the fob against the START button to start the car if the cell is flat.
  • Still dead? A receiver fault can store a code — look it up on autodtcs.com.

Frequently Asked Questions

What battery does the Jeep Compass key fob use?

A CR2032 coin cell — confirm against the old one.

Do I need to reprogram the fob afterwards?

No — the coding is retained for a battery change.

Can I program a new Compass key myself?

No — a replacement must be ordered from Jeep and coded with a diagnostic tool.

How do I open the fob?

Slide the emergency key out first, then prise the cover off with a small screwdriver.

If the remote stopped after a battery disconnection, see our Compass battery disconnect/reconnect guide.
