Whether you’re fitting a new battery, storing your Jeep Renegade (2014–present) over winter, or working near the airbags, disconnecting the 12 V battery safely takes a few extra steps on this car — and afterwards several convenience systems need re-initialising. Here’s the full sequence.
Before You Disconnect
The Renegade’s 12 V battery sits in the engine bay. On the 4xe plug-in hybrid, this is still the 12 V battery you work with — never touch the orange high-voltage cabling or the traction battery.
- Switch the ignition off and make a note of your radio presets and personal settings.
- Make sure all electrical consumers (lights, blower, etc.) are off.
- Wait 1 minute after switching off before disconnecting, to let the modules power down.
- Disconnect the negative (−) terminal first, then the positive.
Safety note: if you’ll be working on pyrotechnic components (airbags, seat-belt pretensioners), wait 2 minutes after disconnecting before starting.
Reconnecting and Re-initialising
Reconnect positive first, then negative. With the ignition off and the driver’s door closed, the Renegade then needs these owner re-initialisations:
- Power windows — one-touch function (see our windows guide).
- Electric sunroof, if fitted.
- Power tailgate, if fitted.
The clock, radio presets and some driver settings will also need re-entering.
If Something Isn’t Right Afterwards
- Windows won’t auto-close / sunroof won’t auto-run — that’s the lost calibration; run the relevant re-initialisation.
- Warning lights after reconnection — often clear after a short drive; a persistent one stores a code (decode it on autodtcs.com).
- A new/different battery — fit the same type and capacity as the original for the stop/start charging logic.
