Turn Off the Start-Stop System

These instructions apply to the Jeep Renegade Mk1 (BU) 2014-Present. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 6, 2026

Your Jeep Renegade (2014–present) switches the engine off at a standstill to save fuel, then restarts it as you move away. If you’d prefer to keep the engine running — in stop-start traffic, when manoeuvring, or by preference — you can disable the system in one press. Here’s how, and why it’s back on next time you drive.

Turning the System Off

  1. With the engine running, press the stop/start “A” button (an A inside a circular arrow) on the dashboard.
  2. The stop/start warning light illuminates to confirm the system is switched off.
  3. The engine now stays running at a standstill until you switch the system back on or restart the car.

The system defaults back to on every time you start the Renegade, so turning it off is a per-drive choice — press the button again to re-enable it.

When the Renegade Disables Stop/Start Itself

Even with the system on, the Renegade won’t stop the engine when conditions aren’t suitable, so an engine that keeps idling isn’t necessarily faulty. It holds the engine running when, for example, the cabin is still heating or cooling to the set temperature, the engine is cold, or the 12 V battery charge is low.

If Stop/Start Stops Working

  • Check the battery. Stop/start relies on a healthy, well-charged 12 V battery; an ageing one is the most common reason the engine stops cutting out.
  • Fasten your seat belt and close the doors/bonnet — open ones inhibit the function.
  • Warning light flagging a fault? A charging or sensor issue stores a code — look it up on autodtcs.com.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I turn off stop/start on a Jeep Renegade?

Press the “A” stop/start button on the dash; the warning light comes on to confirm it’s disabled until the next restart.

Does the setting stay off?

No — it resets to on each time you start the car, so press the button each drive if you want it off.

Why has my Renegade stopped switching the engine off?

Usually a low or ageing 12 V battery, or the engine/cabin not yet at temperature.

Is it harmful to leave stop/start on?

No — the system and starter are built for it; switching off is purely preference.

If a warning light appeared with the stop/start change, decode it on autodtcs.com.
