Reset the Service Indicator

These instructions apply to the Jeep Wrangler Mk2 (TJ) 1997-2006.

Short answer: the Jeep Wrangler TJ (1997–2006) has no electronic service-interval reminder to reset — servicing is tracked by the mileage schedule in the handbook, not a dashboard counter. If the light you mean is the check-engine (MIL) light, you can read the code without a scanner using the ignition “key dance” and then clear it.

The TJ Has No Service Reminder

Unlike modern Jeeps, the TJ’s instrument cluster does not keep a service-interval count and has no service menu, so there is nothing to reset after an oil change. Follow the maintenance schedule in the owner’s handbook (oil and filter at the listed mileage, and the other checks at their intervals). There is no button sequence or tool that “resets the service light” because the feature was never fitted.

If You Mean the Check-Engine Light

On a TJ, the dashboard light owners often call the “service light” is the check-engine (MIL) lamp. It signals an emissions/engine fault, and it will keep coming back until the fault is fixed — clearing it alone doesn’t repair anything. First read the code:

Read the Code Without a Scanner (Key Dance)

  1. Sit in the car with everything off. You don’t need to touch the odometer/trip button — codes appear on their own.
  2. Turn the ignition key to ON three times in quick succession (On–Off–On–Off–On, all within about 5 seconds), without cranking the engine, and leave it in the On position the last time.
  3. Wait a few seconds and read the code by your cluster type (see below): it either shows as a number on the odometer or as flashes of the check-engine light.
  4. Note every code, then look up what each one means before you repair anything.

This shows engine (“P”) codes only — not ABS or airbag codes.

Which Readout Your TJ Gives (by Year)

  • 1997: the check-engine light flashes two-digit codes — count the flashes (a short pause between the two digits, a longer pause between codes; code 55 means “end of list”).
  • 1998–2000: Chrysler disabled the key-dance readout on most of these, so it often shows nothing — you’ll need an OBD-II scanner.
  • 2001–2006: the digital odometer displays the full P-codes directly, ending with “done”.

Clear the Check-Engine Light

Once the fault is fixed, the light clears in one of two ways: it goes out by itself after several fault-free drive cycles, or you can clear it immediately by disconnecting the battery for a short while (see our TJ battery disconnect guide). If it returns, the fault is still present. Note: pulling the battery also wipes the OBD-II readiness monitors, so the Jeep will fail an emissions/OBD test until you’ve driven it through a few full drive cycles — if you have a scanner, clearing codes with it is the tidier way.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I reset the service light on a Jeep Wrangler TJ?

There is no service-interval reminder on the TJ to reset — servicing is by the mileage schedule. If you mean the check-engine light, read the code with the key dance, fix the fault, then let it clear over a few drives or disconnect the battery briefly.

How do I read TJ codes without a scanner?

Turn the ignition On–Off–On–Off–On quickly without starting, leave it On, and read the code on the odometer (or count the check-engine flashes). It shows engine codes only.

Does the TJ have an oil-service reset?

No. The TJ has no oil-life monitor or service counter, so there is nothing to reset — just change the oil at the scheduled mileage.

Will disconnecting the battery clear the check-engine light?

Yes, briefly disconnecting the battery clears stored codes and turns the light off — but only fix, not hide, the fault, or it will come straight back.

The light came back after clearing — why?

The underlying fault is still there. Read the code again and address the cause rather than repeatedly clearing the light.

To find out exactly what a stored code means, look it up on our sister site autodtcs.com before you start replacing parts.
