If the electric sunroof on your Kia Cee’d Mk2 (JD, 2012–2018) has stopped opening or closing properly, stops part-way, or lost its one-touch function, the roof controller needs re-initialising. It usually happens after the battery is disconnected or goes flat, after a fuse is pulled, or if the roof was operated with the emergency handle. The fix is a two-stage relearn you can do yourself with the roof switch — no tools.
Why the Sunroof Loses Its Calibration
The roof module stores its end positions so it can run automatically and stop if it meets resistance (anti-trap). A power loss clears those references, so until you re-teach them the roof only moves while you hold the switch. This is one of the follow-up steps in the Cee’d battery procedure.
First, a Few Checks
- Make sure the battery is well charged.
- Clear the roof and tracks of debris so the glass can reach its end stops.
- Keep hands and objects clear of the opening — the anti-trap protection is off during the relearn.
How to Re-initialise the Cee’d Sunroof
The relearn has two holds: the first closes and nudges the roof, the second runs a full self-test cycle. Do not let go between them.
- Turn the ignition to ON (you do not need to start the engine).
- Fully close the sunroof glass and the sunshade, then release the switch.
- Press and hold the close switch for more than 10 seconds. The roof closes fully and then moves slightly to begin the relearn. Release the switch.
- Within 3 seconds, press and hold the close switch again — keep holding while the roof runs its full self-test: it tilts down, slides fully open, then slides closed.
- Release the switch once the roof has closed. The relearn is complete.
- Check that one-touch tilt, open and close all work normally.
Do not release the switch during either hold, and start the second hold within three seconds of the first — if the timing is missed, begin again from step 2.
If the Sunroof Still Won’t Auto-Operate
- You released the switch too soon or missed the 3-second window: repeat the two-stage relearn.
- Weak battery: charge it and try again.
- Dirty or dry tracks: clean the channels and apply silicone lubricant.

- Roof leaking or slow: clear the sunroof drain channels before relying on the relearn.
