To change the wiper blades or lift the arms off the glass in winter on a Kia Ceed Mk3 (CD, 2018–present), the arms need to be in their service position — standing up clear of the bonnet edge. If you just switch off, the arms park low under the bonnet lip where you can’t reach them and where there isn’t room to unclip a blade or stand an arm on its spring. Raising them to the service position gives you full access to both blades and lets you flip the arms away from the screen. It’s a normal built-in feature, not a fault, and on the Ceed it’s triggered from the wiper stalk within a short window after switching off. Here’s how to raise them.
Why There’s a Service Position
When you turn the Ceed off, the wipers drive down and tuck below the trailing edge of the bonnet. That keeps them out of the airflow and out of the driver’s eyeline, but it also parks the base of each arm right against the bonnet lip and the plastic scuttle. Try to peel an arm up from there and it fouls the trim, so you find yourself levering against the paintwork. Push too hard and the arm can bend or the trim can crack. The service position solves it by first sweeping the arms up to the top of the screen, well clear of the bonnet, and holding them there so you can lift them the last part of the way on their pivots.
Before You Begin
- Make sure the bonnet is closed and latched — the arms need the full height of the screen to sweep into.
- Be ready to act promptly: the stalk trigger below only works for a short window after you switch the engine off.
- If the blades are frozen to the glass, free them first — a stuck blade can stall the motor or tear the rubber as the arms rise.
- Have the new blades ready so you’re not fighting a sprung arm while you look for parts.
- Work one arm at a time and keep a hand on each arm you lift.
How to Set the Wiper Service Position
- Make sure the bonnet is closed.
- Turn the engine off.
- Within 20 seconds, hold the wiper stalk in the ‘MIST’ position (push it up/towards the single-wipe) and wait about 2 seconds.
- Release — the wipers move up to the service position.
- Lift the arms away from the glass to change the blades or clear snow.
Returning the Wipers to Normal
When you’ve finished, fold each arm gently back down so the blade lies flat against the screen. Then switch the ignition on and operate the wipers once — they sweep through and re-park in the normal resting spot below the bonnet. Give the screen a quick wash-wipe afterwards to confirm the blades are sweeping cleanly and sitting correctly.
If the Wipers Won’t Lift
- You missed the 20-second window — switch off and try again promptly.
- Hold the MIST position a full 2 seconds — a quick flick just does a single wipe.
- Check you switched the engine off first — the mode only arms after shut-down, not with the car running.
- Make sure the bonnet is fully closed so nothing blocks the arms’ travel.
- Free any frozen blade before retrying so the motor isn’t fighting ice.
- If nothing happens, cycle the ignition off again and repeat the sequence from the start.
Changing the Blades
With the arms upright, hold each arm firmly while you work — a wiper arm is under strong spring tension and will snap back against the glass if it slips, which can crack the screen. Ceed blades typically use a common clip or hook fitting: press the release tab, slide the old blade off, and clip the new one on until it locks with a click. Once fitted, lower the arm slowly onto the glass rather than letting it drop. Check both blades sit flush before you send the arms back to park.
