To change the wiper blades on a Kia Sportage Mk5 (NQ5, 2021–present) you first put the wipers into their service position so the arms lift clear of the bonnet. Kia uses the wiper stalk’s ‘MIST’ position to trigger it — here’s the routine.
The service position — also known as the maintenance or winter position — raises both wiper arms up off the glass so you can get at the blades. You’ll use it whenever you renew the blades, and it’s just as handy in frost: standing the arms up overnight stops the rubber freezing to the screen and tearing when the wipers next run. It also clears the scuttle so you can sweep out leaves and grit. Why There’s a Service Position
The Sportage parks its wipers low, tucked against the scuttle under the trailing edge of the bonnet for clean styling and good visibility. The downside is that there’s almost no room to raise an arm from that resting spot — lift a blade straight up from park and the arm can catch the bonnet lip, which easily bends the arm or chips the paint. The service position first drives the wipers up onto the open glass, so the arms lift away with plenty of clearance.
Before You Begin
- Bonnet closed — the arms rise into the space the raised bonnet would occupy, so keep it shut until the wipers have stopped.
- Wipers parked — start from the normal rest position, not mid-wipe.
- Free any frozen blades first — ease stuck rubber off the glass by hand, or the motor can strain against it.
- Have the right blades ready — and check the lengths, as the driver and passenger blades differ on the Sportage.
- Work one arm at a time — so an unsupported arm can’t spring back down onto the screen.
How to Set the Sportage Mk5 Wiper Service Position
- Make sure the bonnet is closed and the wipers are parked.
- With the ignition on then switched off, hold the wiper stalk in the ‘MIST’ position (push it up/towards you for a single wipe) and keep holding for at least 2 seconds.
- The wipers move up to the service position and stop.
- Lift the arms off the glass and renew the blades.
Returning the Wipers to Normal
With the fresh blades on, fold both arms carefully back down onto the screen. Then turn the ignition on and operate the wipers briefly — they sweep back down and settle into their normal parked position under the scuttle. Give the glass a squirt of washer fluid and a test wipe to confirm the new blades sit flat and clear cleanly.
If It Doesn’t Work
- Didn’t hold long enough — keep the stalk in MIST for the full 2 seconds, not just a flick.
- Wrong ignition state — the routine expects the ignition switched off after being on; if the car’s still live, the stalk just wipes.
- Bonnet open — the function expects the bonnet closed.
- Wipers weren’t parked — let them finish and rest before you begin.
- Blades frozen — free them gently first, or the motor may stall.
Changing the Blades
With the arms raised, support each one as you work so it can’t spring back and crack the glass. Most Sportage blades use a common clip or hook fitting: release the catch where the blade meets the arm, slide the old blade off, and clip the new one on until it locks home. Check it’s properly seated before letting go, then lower the arm gently onto the screen rather than letting it drop.
