Disconnecting the 12 V battery on your Land Rover Freelander (2006–2014) — to fit a new one, store the car, or work near the airbags — is straightforward, as the battery is conveniently under the bonnet. Here’s the safe sequence.
Before You Disconnect
The 12 V battery is in the engine bay, behind a cover.
- Switch the ignition off and note your radio code/presets and settings.
- Ensure all electrical consumers are switched off.
- Disconnect the negative (−) terminal first, then the positive.
Working near airbags or pretensioners? Allow a minute or two after disconnecting before starting.
Reconnecting
- Reconnect positive first, negative last.
- Switch the ignition on and re-initialise the power windows (one-touch is lost).
- Re-enter the clock and any settings; the steering-angle/stability systems relearn as you drive straight and turn.
Fitting a new battery? A like-for-like battery is fine; the Freelander 2 doesn’t need a dealer registration for a standard swap, though it benefits from a full charge before fitting.
If Something Isn’t Right Afterwards
- Windows won’t auto-close — run the window re-initialisation.
- Warning lights after reconnection often clear after a short drive; a persistent one stores a code (decode on autodtcs.com).
- Radio asks for a code — enter the security code from your handbook/wallet.
