Replace the Cabin Air Filter

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 10, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Lexus RX Mk2 (XU30) 2003-2008.

The cabin (pollen) filter on the Lexus RX (XU30, 2003–2009) sits behind the glovebox and cleans the air drawn into the heater and air-conditioning. A clogged filter weakens airflow, fogs the windows and lets in smells, so most owners change it about every 12 months or 15,000 km — more often in dusty or pollen-heavy areas. It is a tool-free job that takes around ten minutes.

Where the filter is

On the XU30 RX the filter lives in a slot in the air-conditioning housing directly behind the glovebox. You reach it by letting the glovebox swing fully down — there is no need to remove any trim with tools.

How to replace the cabin filter

  1. Open the glovebox and take everything out of it.
  2. Squeeze both sides of the glovebox inward so the side stops clear their tracks, then let the box swing all the way down. On some trims a small damper arm on the right also unclips.
  3. Behind the glovebox you will see the filter cover panel. Unlatch it on both sides and lift it away.
  4. Slide the old filter straight out of its housing. Note the airflow arrow printed on the filter frame before it comes out.
  5. Fit the new filter with its airflow arrow pointing down (the direction air flows into the blower). Do not force it — it only seats one way.
  6. Refit the cover until both clips latch, lift the glovebox back onto its stops, and close it.

Run the fan on high for a moment afterwards to confirm airflow has improved. Keep the old filter’s part number or the filter itself to match the correct replacement — the OEM Lexus/Denso filter for this car is widely stocked.

FAQ

How often should the RX cabin filter be changed?

About every 12 months or 15,000 km under normal use; sooner if you drive in heavy pollen, dust or city traffic, or if airflow has dropped and the windows mist up easily.

Which way does the filter go in?

With the airflow arrow on the frame pointing down. Fitting it upside-down reduces airflow and shortens its life.

Do I need any tools?

No. The glovebox drops down by hand and the filter cover unclips — no screwdriver is required on the XU30 RX.
