The cabin air filter on the Mazda CX-5 Mk1 (KE, 2012–2017) sits behind the glove compartment, in a slide-out tray. Replacing it is a five-minute job with no tools — you drop the glovebox out of the way, slide the old filter out and feed the new one in the right way up. Mazda calls for a change every 24 months or 40,000 km, sooner if your airflow has weakened or smells musty.
What You Need
- A new cabin (pollen) filter for the CX-5 KE.
- No tools — the glovebox releases by hand.
How to Replace the Cabin Air Filter
- Open the glove compartment and remove everything inside it.
- Release the glovebox so it drops fully: squeeze the sides inward past the stops and unhook the damper arm, letting the box hang down out of the way.
- You will see the rectangular filter housing behind it. Slide the filter (and its frame) straight out toward you.
- Before fitting the new one, check the UP / airflow arrow marked on the old filter so you match its orientation.
- Slide the new filter into the housing the same way up, with the arrow pointing in the same direction.
- Lift the glovebox back onto its stops, reconnect the damper arm and close it.
Run the fan on a high setting afterward to confirm airflow is back to normal.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should the CX-5 cabin filter be changed?
Mazda’s schedule lists it at every 24 months or 40,000 km. Replace it sooner if airflow drops, the windows mist up easily or there is a musty smell.
Where is the cabin filter on a Mazda CX-5?
Behind the glove compartment. Drop the glovebox down and the filter slides straight out of its housing.
Can I clean and reuse the old filter?
No. The pleated paper media cannot be washed or blown clean — always fit a new filter.
Does every CX-5 have a cabin filter?
It is fitted to European CX-5s as standard; Mazda lists it as “if equipped” for some markets. If the housing is empty, a filter can still be added.
