Replace a Headlight Bulb

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 2, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Mazda CX-5 Mk1 (KE) 2012-2017.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Whether you can change a headlight bulb on the Mazda CX-5 Mk1 (KE, 2012–2017) yourself depends on which headlamp your car has. Halogen cars use ordinary replaceable bulbs you can fit from the engine bay; Bi-Xenon (HID) cars use a high-voltage D4S bulb that is a dealer job. There is no full-LED headlamp on this generation.

How to Replace a Halogen Headlight Bulb

  1. Switch the lights and ignition off and open the hood.
  2. Work from behind the headlamp. On the right-hand side you may need to lift the washer-fluid reservoir neck out of its guide for room.
  3. Unclip the electrical connector from the back of the bulb (press the tab and pull it straight off).
  4. Twist the bulb holder anticlockwise to release it, then withdraw the bulb straight out of the reflector.
  5. Fit the new bulb without touching the glass with bare fingers — skin oil shortens its life. If you do touch it, wipe it with alcohol.
  6. Refit the holder, reconnect the plug and test the light before closing the hood.

Frequently Asked Questions

What low-beam bulb does the CX-5 take?

Halogen cars use an H11 55 W low-beam bulb. Bi-Xenon cars use a sealed D4S xenon that should be replaced by a workshop.

Can I change the xenon (HID) bulb myself?

It is not recommended. The D4S runs on a high-voltage igniter that can give a dangerous shock — leave xenon bulbs to a dealer.

Does the CX-5 KE have LED headlights?

No full-LED headlamp was offered. Only the side-marker turn signals and the high-mount brake light are LED, and those are sealed units.

If a bulb-out or lighting warning is logged, you can look up the code on autodtcs.com.
