Disconnecting the 12 V battery on a Mercedes-Benz Citan (W415, 2012–2020) is a straightforward job for a battery change or before electrical work. The Citan is built on the Renault Kangoo platform, so it’s mechanically simple — there’s no battery registration, but you should note your radio settings and re-teach the windows afterwards. Where the Battery Is
The battery is in the engine bay (on some versions under a cover or behind a panel). Lift any cover to reach the two terminal clamps. Fit a like-for-like battery if you are renewing it.
Before You Disconnect
- Note your radio code and presets.
- Make sure the ignition key is in the OFF position and removed, and all electrical consumers are switched off.
- If working near airbags or seat-belt pretensioners, allow the system to discharge before handling those parts.
Disconnecting — Correct Order
- Turn the ignition off and open the bonnet.
- Slacken the negative (−, earth) terminal first and lift the lead clear.
- Only undo the positive (+) terminal if you are removing the battery completely.
Reconnecting — Correct Order
- Connect the positive (+) lead first, then the negative (−) earth lead last. Tighten both firmly.
- Turn the ignition on for a few seconds before starting the engine.
What to Reset Afterwards
- Reset the date and time and re-enter your radio code and presets.
- Re-initialise the power windows if one-touch stops working — hold each switch fully up (closed) for a moment to re-teach the position.
- A steering or ESP light may appear; a short straight-line drive usually clears it once the steering-angle sensor relearns.
If a Warning Light Stays On
One or two lights right after reconnecting is normal and should clear on a short drive. If a warning stays on, a fault code was logged — reading it needs an OBD scanner, and you can look up what the code means on autodtcs.com.
Registering or Coding the New Battery
Yes. The energy-management system must be told a new battery has been fitted (and its type/capacity if it differs), or it will not charge it correctly. This teach-in is done through the OBD port with a suitable diagnostic tool at a specialist or dealer — there is no owner trick. An AGM battery must be replaced with AGM.
