If the one-touch (auto up/down) windows stop working on your Mercedes-Benz GLC (X253, 2015–2022) — usually after the battery was disconnected or went flat — the window motor has lost its learned end-stops and anti-trap reference. Re-teaching it takes seconds per door, no tools.

This is one of the most common “something’s broken” scares after any 12V battery work on the X253 GLC, yet nothing is actually faulty. The glass still goes up and down while you hold the switch — it just refuses to run on its own, and it may bounce back down as you try to close it. That behaviour is the car protecting itself, not a failed motor or switch, and a one-minute relearn per door normally puts it right.
Why It Happens
Each door’s window control unit stores the exact fully-closed and fully-open positions of the glass. One-touch uses those stored limits to know when to stop, and the anti-trap (pinch protection) uses them to tell the difference between the glass reaching the seal and the glass hitting an obstruction such as a hand. When the 12V supply is interrupted — a disconnect, a jump start, a flat battery, or even a heavily discharged battery in cold weather — that stored reference is lost. The controller falls back to a safe “hold-to-move” mode until you teach it the top and bottom stops again.
Before You Begin
- Do this with the ignition on (engine running is fine) so the window motors have full voltage.
- Work on one door at a time, sitting at that door’s switch with the door closed.
- Make sure the glass path is clear — no arm, phone cable or ice on the seal, and the window runners are free of grit.
- If the battery was flat, let it take a short charge first; a weak battery can make the relearn fail halfway.
- Expect to repeat the routine on every window that has one-touch, each from its own switch.
How to Re-initialise a Window
- Sit in the car with the door closed and the ignition on.
- Pull the switch up to fully close the window and keep holding for a few seconds after it stops.
- Release, then push the switch down to fully open and hold a moment at the bottom.
- Pull up again to fully close and hold for a few seconds at the top.
- Release and test one-touch up and down — it should now run on its own.
Repeat for each affected window using its own switch.
If One-Touch Still Doesn’t Work
- Hold a little longer at the top. The controller only registers the closed limit once the motor has stalled against the seal and you keep the switch held for a couple of seconds after.
- Run the full cycle twice. Some cars need the down-then-up sequence repeated before both end-stops are stored.
- Check the door is fully shut. An ajar door or a partly latched door can leave the window in a protected state.
- Confirm the battery is healthy. If it was deeply flat, charge it and try again — low voltage is the usual reason a relearn won’t stick.
- Clear the runners. Grit or a dry seal can stop the glass just short of the top so the limit never registers; the anti-trap then bounces it back.
- Check the door module fuse if one window is completely dead rather than just non-auto — a blown fuse or a knocked connector behind the door card is a separate fault from the relearn.
- If a single window still won’t learn after several clean attempts, have that door’s regulator and switch checked — a worn regulator can stall early.
After the Reset
Once the limits are stored, one-touch up and down returns immediately and the anti-trap works normally — the window will stop and reverse if it meets resistance on the way up, which is exactly what you want. The setting is permanent until the next time the battery is disconnected or goes flat, so you shouldn’t need to repeat it in normal use. If you notice it again, that’s a clue the 12V battery may be failing.

No, that’s the anti-trap protection. With the limits unlearned the controller can’t tell the seal from an obstruction, so it reverses as a safety default. Completing the hold-at-the-top relearn tells it where the real closed position is and the bouncing stops.
Will this happen again next time I change the battery?
Yes — any interruption to the 12V supply clears the stored positions, so plan to re-initialise the windows after any battery disconnect or replacement. It only takes a minute per door. If the windows keep losing their memory without you touching the battery, have the battery and charging system checked.
