The MG MG3 (2011–2023) supermini is a turn-key car: it uses a bladed remote key that unlocks the doors by radio and then goes into an ignition barrel that you twist to start. There is no push-button keyless start on the MG3, so a dead key-fob battery is far less of a problem than on a modern proximity car — the engine still starts as normal.
Dead Fob Battery? The MG3 Still Starts
The coin cell in the MG3 remote only powers the lock and unlock buttons. Starting runs through the engine immobiliser, which reads the passive transponder chip in the key — and that chip needs no battery. You may notice the immobiliser warning light in the instrument cluster flash when you operate a dying remote, but the car still starts.
- If the remote buttons are dead, unlock the door manually with the key blade (see below).
- Insert the key into the ignition barrel.
- Turn it to start as you always do. The immobiliser reads the chip and the engine cranks and starts normally.
A flat fob battery on the MG3 therefore leaves you able to drive away — you only lose the remote-lock buttons until you fit a fresh cell.
Unlock the Door With the Key Blade
When the remote stops responding, fall back to the metal blade — on the MG3 it is the same key you put in the ignition.
- If your key has a folding or separate blade, release it; on a one-piece key, just use the cut metal end.
- Insert the blade into the driver’s door lock cylinder and turn to unlock.
- If the alarm chirps, turning the key in the ignition to start clears it.
Why the Immobiliser Doesn’t Need the Fob Battery
The MG3’s immobiliser uses an antenna ring around the ignition barrel to energise the passive transponder chip in the key. The chip then sends its code so the engine control unit allows the engine to run. Because the chip is powered by the antenna’s field, a completely flat coin cell never blocks starting — it only silences the radio that drives the remote-lock buttons. The flashing immobiliser light when the remote fails is normal and not a fault in itself.
Replace the Coin Cell
Restore the remote buttons with a new battery.
- Prise the key case apart at the seam with a small flat screwdriver, or split it where the handbook shows.
- The MG3 remote typically uses a CR2032 3V lithium coin cell (some keys use a CR2025 — check the old one).
- Lift out the old cell and fit the new one the same way up (positive usually faces the cover).
- Clip the case shut and test the lock/unlock buttons standing beside the car.
