Reset the Service Indicator

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated September 7, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the MG MG3 Mk1 (SZP1) 2011-2023.

Short answer: on the MG3 Mk1 (SZP1, 2011–2023) there is no dashboard button-sequence to clear the service reminder. Both MG’s own handbook and independent workshop data are explicit that the service-interval counter has to be reset with a diagnostic tool over the OBD-II port. Here is what the job involves, what it costs at a garage versus doing it yourself, and the one reset on this car you can do without any tool.

What the Service Reminder Means

The MG3 shows a spanner symbol and a distance-to-next-service figure in the instrument message centre. The number starts at the full service interval for your market and counts down in 25-mile (50 km) steps as you drive, reaching zero when the service is due. It is a maintenance reminder, not a fault — but once the service is done the counter has to be reset, or it stays at zero.

  • A spanner / “service due” symbol that stays on after a service.
  • The distance-to-service readout sitting at zero.
  • A reminder that reappears at every start because the last service was never reset.

Why a Diagnostic Tool Is Needed

The service interval on the MG3 is held in the instrument/body control module, and MG did not build in an owner reset sequence for it. The handbook states plainly that the service-interval information “can only be reset by an MG Authorised Repairer”, and independent workshop data carries the same note — “a diagnostic tool must be used for this operation”. There is no hidden button combination on this generation; the counter is cleared electronically over the OBD-II port. (The all-new 2024 MG3 is different — it does have a dashboard long-press reset.)

What the Job Looks Like With a Tool

On a capable tool the path is roughly Diagnosis → Service / Maintenance → Service interval reset. Menu names vary by brand of tool.

  • Plug the tool into the OBD-II port (in the driver’s footwell area, under the dash).
  • Ignition on, engine off, unless the tool prompts otherwise.
  • Select the MG service-reset function and follow the on-screen prompts.
  • The distance-to-service readout returns to the full interval once it completes.

The One Reset You Can Do Without a Tool

The MG3’s tyre-pressure (TPMS) reset is owner-doable and needs no tool: scroll the message centre to the TPMS Reset screen and press and hold the trip button for more than two seconds until “TPMS RESET” confirms. That re-learns your current pressures after inflating or a wheel change — it does not touch the service-interval counter, which still needs the tool above.

Garage Cost vs Doing It Yourself

OptionTypical costNotes
Dealer / independent garageAbout a half-hour labour charge — and usually done as part of the service itselfOne-off per service.
DIY — MG-capable OBD service toolA low one-off outlayPays for itself over a couple of services; also covers other resets.
DIY — multi-make diagnostic tabletA larger one-off outlayWorth it only if you work on several cars.

Prices vary by region and year; treat these as a guide rather than a fixed quote.

Which kind of tool does this? (When links are live we may earn from qualifying purchases.)

An MG3 service reset needs a tool with MG service functions, not a generic code reader that only shows fault codes. The classes that do it: an MG-capable app plus a compatible OBD adapter (cheapest if you already have a phone), a standalone service-reset scanner that lists MG, or a multi-make diagnostic tablet if you service several cars. Before buying, confirm the tool explicitly lists MG service-interval reset for 2011–2023 cars.

Check It Worked

  • The spanner / service symbol is gone and stays off on the next few starts.
  • The distance-to-service readout shows the full interval again, not zero.
  • A re-scan shows no new related fault codes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I reset the MG3 service light without a tool?

No. Neither MG’s handbook nor independent workshop data lists a dashboard button method for this generation — the service-interval counter is reset electronically over OBD-II. Without it, the reminder stays on.

What kind of scanner do I need for an MG3 service reset?

One with genuine MG service-reset functions, such as an MG-capable app-and-adapter or a service scanner that lists MG. A basic plug-in code reader that only reads and clears fault codes will not reset the service interval.

What does a garage charge to reset the MG3 service indicator?

Usually about a half-hour labour charge if done on its own, and often nothing extra when it is reset as part of a full service. A one-off tool purchase can work out cheaper if you service the car yourself.

Is the tyre-pressure reset the same as the service reset?

No. The TPMS reset (hold the trip button on the TPMS Reset screen) is owner-doable and only re-learns tyre pressures. The service-interval reset is a separate, tool-only operation.

Does the newer 2024 MG3 also need a tool?

No — the all-new MG3 launched in 2024 has a dashboard reset (a long press of the OK button on the Next Service screen). This tool requirement applies to the 2011–2023 car.
