Fix Charging That Won’t Start (PHEV)

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated September 24, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Mitsubishi Outlander Mk3 PHEV (GG2W) 2014-2021.

When a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV won’t charge, the manual points to a short list of causes: the wrong or an incompatible cable or charger, a charge timer that’s still set, a connector that isn’t locked in, or — at a rapid charger — the charger’s own power or self-diagnosis. Work through these checks, for home (AC) and public rapid (DC) charging, before assuming a fault with the car.

First, the quick checks

  • Push the connector fully home until it locks — a partly engaged connector will not charge, and can leave the car free to move.
  • Use the correct EV charging cable for this car (not one meant for another vehicle), into a socket or charger that is compatible, and follow the charger’s own instructions.
  • Check you have not left a charge timer set in the MITSUBISHI Remote Control or MMCS — with a timer set, charging waits for that time instead of starting now, so cancel it to charge immediately.
  • Confirm there is power at the socket or charge point, and that the button on the connector hasn’t been pressed.

If charging stops part-way

  • Power interruption: a power cut or a tripped breaker stops charging; it resumes once the supply returns.
  • Cable knocked out: check the connector is still fully engaged at both ends.
  • Connector button pressed: pressing the button on the connector stops charging — simply start the charging procedure again.
  • Battery too hot or cold: charging pauses until the drive battery is back within its temperature range.
  • Timer: a charge timer can end the session at the set time.

If rapid (DC) charging won’t start

At a public rapid charger, check the connector is properly connected and locked, and that the charger’s own power is on. If the charger’s self-diagnosis fails, stop and contact a Mitsubishi dealer; if the same fault appears at other chargers, have the car inspected.

Releasing the connector

The connector locks in place while charging. To stop and remove it, press the manual stop button on the control box, then press the button on the connector to unlock and withdraw it. If it still won’t release after a clean stop, do not force it — contact a Mitsubishi dealer. And do not drive or move the car unless the connector is fully locked in or fully removed.

When to see a dealer

Contact a Mitsubishi dealer if charging fails repeatedly with the correct cable across different chargers, if a warning shows on the control box or dashboard, or if the connector won’t release after a normal stop. Do not force a connector or keep using a suspect cable.

Frequently asked questions

Why does rapid charging stop at about 80%?

That’s by design. Public rapid (DC) charging is set to stop at roughly 80% of the drive battery’s capacity to protect it — simply start the charge again if you need more.

If a charging or hybrid-system warning light stays on, you can look up what the specific dashboard symbol or fault code means on autodtcs.com.
