These instructions apply to the Nissan Murano Mk3 (Z52) 2015-2020.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

The Nissan Murano (Z52, 2015–2020) has a built-in instrument-cluster self-diagnosis mode you can open yourself with no scan tool. It sweeps the gauges, lights every warning lamp the cluster controls and steps through internal checks — the fastest way to prove the cluster itself is healthy when a gauge or warning light behaves oddly.

What the Self-Test Shows

  • A pointer sweep — the speedometer, tachometer, coolant-temperature and fuel gauges each run from zero to maximum and back, twice.
  • A warning/indicator lamp check — all lamps the cluster controls illuminate at once.
  • Internal identification and status items (software, hardware and any stored error codes) shown in the information display.

How to Enter the Hidden Diagnostic Menu

You use the trip-reset switch on the cluster (the button that switches between ODO and TRIP A/B).

  1. Turn the ignition OFF.
  2. Press and hold the trip-reset switch, and while holding it turn the ignition to ON.
  3. Keep pressing the trip-reset switch for 1 second or more.
  4. Within 7 seconds of switching the ignition ON, press the trip-reset switch at least three times.
  5. A code appears at the top of the information display and self-diagnosis begins.
  6. Each further press of the trip-reset switch steps to the next test — through the gauge sweep and the warning-lamp check.
  7. Turn the ignition OFF to leave the mode.

Note: if the trip-reset switch is not touched for 20 seconds, the mode cancels automatically.

Reading the Result

Every gauge and lamp should respond. A needle that will not sweep, or a warning lamp that will not light, points to a fault inside the cluster rather than the sensor or system it reports — a fuel or temperature gauge that sweeps fine here but reads wrong while driving usually means the sender is at fault. If the mode will not start at all, the cluster power or ground is suspect; if those are good, the cluster itself is the likely cause.

How to Exit

Switch the ignition OFF (or leave it 20 seconds untouched). The cluster returns to normal at the next start and nothing has been changed — the mode only reads and displays.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this clear warning lights or codes? No — it is a display, lamp and gauge test only.

Will it show fault codes? It displays cluster-internal identification and error items. Reading the vehicle’s system trouble codes needs a diagnostic tool on the data link connector.

The mode will not start — what is wrong? The timing is tight: hold the trip switch as you turn to ON, keep holding a second, then three presses inside seven seconds.

It cancelled by itself — why? Leaving the trip-reset switch untouched for 20 seconds exits the mode automatically; just re-enter and keep stepping through.
