Replace the Intelligent Key Battery

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated September 7, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Nissan Murano Mk3 (Z52) 2015-2020.

When the Intelligent Key battery in your Nissan Murano (Z52, 2015–2020) runs low, a Key battery low message appears in the vehicle information display and the remote range drops. Replacing it takes a minute with a common CR2032 coin cell and a small screwdriver — no dealer needed.

Before You Start

  • Battery type: CR2032 (3-volt lithium coin cell) or equivalent.
  • You need a small flat screwdriver — wrap the tip in cloth to protect the case.
  • Note the orientation of the old cell before you lift it out.

How to Replace the Battery

  1. Slide the mechanical key blade out of the Intelligent Key (release the catch and pull it free).
  2. Insert a small screwdriver into the slit at the corner where the blade sat, and gently twist to separate the upper and lower halves of the case. Keep a cloth over the tip so you do not mark the casing.
  3. Lift out the old CR2032. Handle the new cell by its edges only — fingerprints across the flat faces drain it.
  4. Fit the new CR2032 with the + (positive) side facing the bottom of the case (the side away from the buttons).
  5. Close the case until the seam clicks shut all the way round.
  6. Refit the mechanical key blade.
  7. Press a button to check the indicator light, then test lock and unlock.

Do not touch the internal circuit board or the metal terminals — it can cause a malfunction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which battery does it take? A CR2032 — a 3-volt lithium coin cell sold in any supermarket or hardware store.

Which way up does it go? The positive (+) side faces the bottom of the case, away from the buttons.

The remote is still weak after a new battery — why? Check the + orientation and that you did not touch the contacts. If range is still poor, the key may need re-synchronising at a dealer.

Will the car still start if the key is dead? Yes — touch the key to the push-button start and the immobiliser reads it by contact. See our dead Intelligent Key guide.
