These instructions apply to the Nissan Qashqai Mk1 (J10) 2006-2013.

Every first-generation Nissan Qashqai (J10), built from 2006 to 2013, carries a standard 16-pin OBD-II diagnostic socket. This is the same trapezoidal connector fitted across the industry, so any generic code reader, Bluetooth dongle or workshop scan tool will plug straight in. On this Qashqai the port sits within easy reach of the driver, and you can get to it without unscrewing panels or pulling out any trim. Once you know exactly where it is, connecting a scanner takes only a few seconds.
OBD-II Port Location
On the J10 Qashqai the diagnostic socket is on the driver’s side of the cabin, low down beneath the dashboard and close to the fuse-panel area at the outer end of the dash. Rather than facing straight out into the footwell, the connector is tucked up under the lower edge of the dash, so it is easiest to see if you crouch by the open door and look upward toward the underside of the trim. On right-hand-drive cars it sits by your right knee near the fuse cover; on left-hand-drive cars it is the mirror image on the left. The socket is exposed and does not sit behind a screwed-on cover, though it may be partly shielded by the plastic fuse-box flap.
Before You Plug In
- Park the Qashqai on level ground, apply the handbrake and switch the ignition off before you go hunting for the socket.
- Have a torch ready, as the footwell is shadowed and the connector sits up under the dash lip.
- Clear the driver’s floor mat and any loose items so you have clean access to the space below the steering column.
- Check that your reader or dongle is the standard 16-pin OBD-II type, which is what this generation uses.
How to Access the Connector
- Open the driver’s door fully and sit sideways or kneel outside so you can see up into the footwell.
- Look along the lower edge of the dashboard toward the fuse-panel area at the outer end, near your knee.
- Shine the torch upward until the black 16-pin socket comes into view beneath the trim; feel for it if the light does not reach.
- Line up your tool’s connector with the socket’s shape and push it firmly home until it seats with a light click.
Tips for Safe Use
- Insert and remove the plug gently and straight, so you do not bend a pin or strain the socket’s mountings.
- Leave the ignition off while plugging in, then turn it to the “on” position when the tool asks you to.
- Unplug any dongle you are not actively using, as a device left in the socket can slowly draw current and flatten the battery over weeks.
- Use a scanner from a reputable brand; cheap unbranded adapters can behave unpredictably on the CAN bus.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the OBD-II port on a 2006-2013 Nissan Qashqai?
It is on the driver’s side, low under the dashboard near the fuse-panel area at the outer end of the dash. Crouch by the open door and look upward under the trim, roughly by your knee, and the black 16-pin socket comes into view.
Do I need to remove any trim to reach it on the J10 Qashqai?
No. The socket is exposed under the dash and only needs a torch to spot. You may have to move the plastic fuse-box flap aside, but nothing has to be unscrewed.
Will a standard OBD-II reader work on my first-generation Qashqai?
Yes. Every J10 uses the 16-pin OBD-II connector with CAN, so any generic code reader, phone dongle or professional scan tool designed for OBD-II is compatible.
Can I leave a Bluetooth dongle plugged in permanently?
It is better not to. A dongle left in the socket keeps drawing a small current and, over a Qashqai that sits unused for a while, can drain the battery. Unplug it when you are not using it.
