Initialize the Power Windows

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated September 2, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Nissan Qashqai Mk1 (J10) 2006-2013.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

If the one-touch (auto) up and down on your Qashqai has stopped working, or you have just reconnected or replaced the 12V battery, the electric windows need re-initialising. This teaches each window its travel limits again so the one-touch and anti-pinch protection work as they should.

Nissan Qashqai J10 driver door power-window switches
Re-initialise each electric window from its own switch on the driver's door.
  1. Turn the ignition on and close all the doors.
  2. Press and hold the driver’s power-window switch and open the window fully, then release the switch.
  3. Press and hold the same switch to close the window fully; keep holding it for more than 2 seconds after the window is shut, then release.
  4. Operate one-touch up and one-touch down to check they now work correctly.
  5. Repeat the whole procedure for the passenger’s window, and for any other windows that have one-touch operation.

Good to know

This re-initialisation is the usual fix straight after a battery disconnect or a flat battery, so if you have just been working on the 12V battery it is worth doing on each window as a matter of course.

If one-touch still will not work after you have re-initialised a window correctly, the fault is likely in that window’s switch or motor, which should be checked.

FAQ

Why did my Qashqai windows stop going up in one touch?

The windows lose their stored initialisation after a battery disconnect or a flat battery. One-touch and anti-pinch rely on that stored travel information, so until you re-initialise, the window will only move while you hold the switch.

How do I fix the one-touch windows?

Re-initialise each window: with the ignition on, hold the switch to open it fully, then hold the switch to close it fully and keep holding for more than 2 seconds after it shuts. Then check one-touch works.

Do I need any tools?

No. The whole procedure is done with the window switches and the ignition on; no tools or diagnostic equipment are required.

It still will not auto-close after re-initialising, what now?

If a window will not take the one-touch setting even after following the procedure correctly, have that window’s switch and motor checked, as one of them may be faulty.
