Disconnect and Reconnect the Battery

These instructions apply to the Nissan Qashqai Mk3 (J12) 2021-Present. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 5, 2026

Disconnecting the 12 V battery on a Nissan Qashqai Mk3 (J12, 2021–present) needs a little patience: as a mild-hybrid (mHEV) car its electronics must be allowed to “go to sleep” before you pull the leads — about 12 minutes — or you risk stored faults. This guide covers the correct order and what to reset afterwards.

Where the Battery Is

The 12 V battery is in the engine bay. Lift any cover to reach the two terminal clamps. If you are renewing it, fit a like-for-like battery — the mHEV system uses an enhanced (EFB/AGM) battery, so match the original specification.

Before You Disconnect — The Sleep Cycle

  1. Open the bonnet.
  2. Turn the ignition on.
  3. Open the driver’s door.
  4. Turn the ignition off and close the driver’s door.
  5. Wait 12 minutes for the electronics (and the mild-hybrid system) to power down completely.

Also note your radio/screen settings, and if working near airbags allow the system to discharge before handling those parts.

Disconnecting

  1. After the 12-minute wait, slacken the negative (−, earth) terminal first and lift the lead clear.
  2. Only undo the positive (+) terminal if you are removing the battery completely.

Reconnecting

  1. Connect the positive (+) lead first, then the negative (−) earth lead last. Tighten both firmly.
  2. Turn the ignition on and wait a moment before starting.

What to Reset Afterwards

  • Reset the date and time and reprogram your radio/screen settings.
  • Re-initialise the power windows — one-touch won’t work until re-taught (see our window initialise guide).
  • Re-learn the tyre-pressure system by driving (see our TPMS reset guide).
  • The start/stop system may stay dormant until the battery is charged — normal for the first drive.
  • A steering or ESP light may appear; on the J12 the steering-angle relearn needs a diagnostic tool, so if it doesn’t clear after a short drive, have it reset.

If a Warning Light Stays On

One or two lights right after reconnecting is normal and should clear on a short drive. If the airbag, ABS or engine light stays on, a fault code was logged — reading it needs an OBD scanner, and you can look up what a Nissan code means on autodtcs.com.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why wait 12 minutes before disconnecting the Qashqai battery?

The mild-hybrid Qashqai keeps modules awake briefly after you switch off. The ignition-on/door-open/off/door-close sequence then a 12-minute wait lets them sleep, so nothing is mid-write when power is cut.

Do I need to register a new battery?

Nissan recommends the battery monitoring is reset for a new battery (a garage job with a scan tool) so the charging strategy is correct. The car runs without it, but for full mHEV/stop-start function it’s worth doing.

How long should I leave it disconnected?

Around 10–15 minutes once the leads are off lets everything power down if you’re resetting electronics.

Why is the steering light on afterwards?

The steering-angle sensor lost its reference. On the J12 it’s relearned with a diagnostic tool, so if a short drive doesn’t clear it, have it reset.
