Reset the Service Indicator

These instructions apply to the Nissan X-Trail Mk3 (T32) 2014-2022. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

The Nissan X-Trail T32 (2014–2022) — the third-generation X-Trail, sold as the Rogue in North America and built in Kyushu (Japan) and Saint Petersburg (Russia) for European markets — uses Nissan’s standard steering-wheel menu-driven reset with the cluster’s central LCD. The T32 actually tracks two separate service items independently: Service (oil change) and Tyre (rotation reminder) — each resets independently through its own menu entry. No diagnostic tool needed.

When to Reset the Service Indicator

  • After completing an oil and filter change (resets the Service item).
  • After rotating the tyres (resets the Tyre item, separate).
  • If the spanner / wrench symbol appears at startup.
  • If you bought the X-Trail second-hand and the previous owner didn’t clear either indicator.

⚠️ The T32 tracks Service and Tyre Rotation as independent counters. Clearing Service does not clear Tyre and vice versa. Reset only the item(s) where work has been completed.

Before You Start

  • Park on a level surface with the engine off. Complete the actual service work before the reset.
  • Identify the steering-wheel controls. The T32 uses three buttons on the right-hand spoke:
    • Up/Down rocker — scrolls through menu items vertically.
    • Left/Right rocker (or arrows) — scrolls within sub-menus on the post-2017 facelift cars.
    • OK / Enter button — confirms a selection.
  • The procedure is purely menu-driven — no pedals, no ignition cycling, no diagnostic tool.

Tools and Supplies

None for the reset itself. For the oil change: fresh Nissan-spec oil — 5W-30 ACEA C2 / Nissan Genuine 5W-30 for the 1.3 / 1.6 / 1.7 dCi diesel (the K9K / R9M Renault-Nissan engines), 5W-30 ACEA C2 / Nissan Genuine for the 1.6 / 2.0 DiG-T petrol; a new spin-on filter (different parts per engine); a 17 mm sump-plug socket (petrol) or 19 mm (dCi); torque about 35 Nm (petrol) or 25 Nm (dCi — low torque, easy to over-tighten).

Service Reset (Oil Change) — Step-by-Step

  1. Turn the ignition ON but do not start the engine. On key-start trims that’s key position II; on Smart Key trims press START/STOP without a foot on the brake.
  2. Using the steering-wheel up/down rocker, scroll through the cluster’s central menu.
  3. Highlight “SETTINGS” and press OK to enter.
  4. Scroll within Settings and highlight “MAINTENANCE”.
  5. Press OK to enter Maintenance.
  6. Highlight “SERVICE” (this is the oil-change counter).
  7. Press OK.
  8. Highlight “RESET”.
  9. Press OK to confirm. The cluster shows a confirmation message and the Service counter resets.
  10. Switch the ignition off to exit.

Tyre Rotation Reset — Step-by-Step

The Tyre rotation counter is a separate item — use this path after rotating your tyres:

  1. Turn the ignition ON.
  2. Scroll to SETTINGS → MAINTENANCE → Tyre (same path as Service but pick Tyre at step 6).
  3. Select “RESET” and press OK.
  4. Confirm. The Tyre counter resets independently of the Service counter.
  5. Switch the ignition off.

Verify the Reset Worked

Switch the ignition off, wait 30 seconds, then cycle back on. The spanner warning should be gone. Re-open the menu (Settings → Maintenance → Service) — the remaining-distance value should now show the full new interval (typically 10,000 miles / 15,000 km or 12 months for European-spec T32 petrol cars; the 1.6 / 1.7 dCi diesel uses 12,500 miles / 20,000 km or 24 months).

Troubleshooting

  • SETTINGS isn’t a top-level menu option. The T32 cluster has multiple top-level views depending on trim. On Visia / Acenta entry trims the menu hierarchy differs slightly — look for “Vehicle Settings” as the equivalent. The path through Maintenance is the same once you’re in.
  • I select RESET but nothing seems to happen. The T32 sometimes requires the OK button to be held briefly (about 1 second) on the RESET item rather than a quick tap. Hold for a full second.
  • Reset Service worked but the spanner is still on at startup. The Tyre rotation reminder is also due. The T32 shows the spanner for either item — check Tyre by going Settings → Maintenance → Tyre. If the percentage is at 0%, reset that too.
  • Reset works but the spanner returns after a few miles. 12V battery condition. Like other Nissan clusters, the T32 is sensitive to cold-crank voltage drop. Load-test the battery; replace if older than 5 years.
  • 2017 facelift T32 — anything different? The 2017 facelift updated the front-end styling and added the ProPILOT semi-autonomous driving system on higher trims, but kept the cluster firmware structure unchanged. Procedure unchanged.
  • I drive a Nissan Rogue Sport (US market) — same procedure? The Rogue Sport is actually the Nissan Qashqai J11, not the X-Trail. For the Rogue (regular, US-market T32), the procedure described above applies. See our Qashqai J11 guide if you have the Rogue Sport.
  • 7-seater X-Trail — same procedure? Yes. The 7-seat variant (introduced in 2014 for European markets) uses the same cluster as the 5-seat car. Procedure unchanged.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the spanner symbol on the Nissan X-Trail mean?

On the T32 the spanner / wrench icon is the maintenance reminder — it indicates either the Service (oil) or Tyre (rotation) counter has reached zero. The cluster doesn’t tell you which one without opening Settings → Maintenance. The icon does not indicate an engine fault. Engine faults trigger the orange check-engine light (an engine-outline icon, different shape).

How often does the X-Trail T32 service indicator come up?

Nissan’s official European-market schedule for the T32:

  • 1.6 / 2.0 DiG-T petrol: 10,000 miles (15,000 km) or 12 months.
  • 1.6 dCi diesel (R9M): 12,500 miles (20,000 km) or 24 months.
  • 1.7 dCi diesel: 12,500 miles (20,000 km) or 24 months.
  • 2.0 dCi diesel: 12,500 miles (20,000 km) or 24 months.

UK severe-service / short-trip driving typically halves the petrol interval to 5,000 miles or 6 months.

Does the reset clear engine fault codes?

No. The reset zeros the Service or Tyre counter only. Engine fault codes are stored in the engine ECU and need a scan tool. For DTC interpretation see autodtcs.com.

What about the X-Trail T33 (2022+)?

The fourth-generation X-Trail (T33) uses the new NissanConnect cluster with a touchscreen-driven reset path through the central infotainment system. Different procedure — we’ll publish a dedicated T33 guide.

And the X-Trail T31 (2007–2014)?

The second-generation X-Trail T31 uses an older cluster with a different menu structure. We’ll publish a dedicated T31 guide.

Is the procedure similar to the Nissan Qashqai J11?

Yes. The Nissan Qashqai J11 (2014–2021) shares the T32’s CMF-CD platform and uses a closely related cluster. The same Settings → Maintenance → Service → Reset path works on both, with minor cosmetic differences in the menu labelling between pre-2017 and post-2017 cars.

X-Trail with 4WD — same procedure?

Yes. The X-Trail’s ALL MODE 4×4-i selector adds menu entries elsewhere in the cluster but doesn’t change the maintenance-reset path. The 4WD lock setting is in a separate menu sub-section.
