If the remote on your Opel Zafira (Mk3/P12, 2011–2019) has stopped unlocking the doors, the coin cell inside the fob has almost certainly gone flat. You are not stuck. This generation — the Zafira Tourer C — hides a metal emergency blade inside the fob to get you in, and keyless cars keep a short-range reader near the steering column so the engine still starts with a dead fob.
The P12 Zafira came two ways. Lower trims use a flip key you slot in and twist, where a flat fob never stops the engine starting. Higher trims with the keyless option have a START/STOP button and a backup-read spot on the steering column. Check which one you have first, then follow the matching section.
Start a Keyless Zafira P12 With a Dead Fob
On the push-button Zafira Tourer the immobiliser can still read the fob at very close range. Do this:
- Get into the car first with the emergency blade (see the next section) — the door buttons will not respond on a flat fob.
- Sit in, press the brake pedal (or the clutch on a manual) and hold it down.
- Hold the fob with the buttons facing out against the marking on the steering column, so the chip sits on the reader.
- With the fob held against the mark, press the START/STOP button with your other hand. The car powers the passive chip, recognises your key and releases the engine.
- Keep the fob against the mark until the car starts. If it does not read first time, reposition the fob slightly and try again.
Start a Flip-Key Zafira P12 With a Dead Fob
If yours is the twist-ignition car, a flat fob is even simpler:
- Press the button on the fob to flip the metal blade out.
- Get into the car (see the next section if the doors will not unlock remotely).
- Slide the blade into the ignition barrel and turn it to start the engine as normal. The coin cell plays no part in starting a twist-ignition Zafira.
Unlock the Zafira P12 With the Emergency Key Blade
The same metal blade that you turn in the ignition also unlocks the door.
- Press the button on the corner of the fob to release the flip blade.
- Go to the driver’s door. The lock barrel is on the door handle, sometimes behind a small plastic cap — prise the cap off with the blade tip if one is fitted.
- Insert the blade and turn it to unlock the driver’s door. The interior central-locking button frees the rest once you are inside.
Why a Flat Battery Does Not Strand You
The Zafira P12 immobiliser never relied on the coin cell. The transponder inside the fob draws its power from the car’s reader coil by induction, like a contactless card, so it still talks to the car with a dead battery. The flat cell only kills the long-range radio that locks the doors from across the car park. Hold the fob to the column mark, or twist the blade in the ignition, and the short-range coil powers the chip directly.
Replace the Key Fob Battery
- Flip the metal blade out — on the Zafira P12 fob this releases the case or exposes the cover.
- Split the fob with a thin coin or plastic pry tool, or pull off the small battery panel.
- Lift out the old cell. The Zafira P12 fob uses a single CR2032 3V coin cell.
- Fit the new battery the same way up as the old one, with the writing facing you and handling it by the edges.
- Clip the case shut, fold the blade away and test the buttons. A fresh cell lasts roughly 2–3 years.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I hold the fob on a keyless Zafira P12? With the buttons facing out, against the marking on the steering column. Hold it there while you press START/STOP and keep it there until the car starts.
My Zafira has a flip key I turn. Does a dead fob stop it starting? No. The flat battery only affects remote locking. Use the blade in the door to get in and the same blade in the ignition to start.
Where is the door lock on the Zafira P12? On the driver’s door handle, sometimes behind a small clip-off cap you prise away with the blade.
Which battery does the Zafira P12 fob take? A CR2032, sold in any supermarket or hardware shop.
It only started with the fob on the column — is something broken? That usually just means the fob battery is weak or flat. Fit a fresh CR2032; if it keeps happening with a new cell, the fob’s transmitter may be failing.
