Jump-Start a Flat Battery

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated September 24, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Renault Trafic Mk3 (X82) 2014-2021.

A flat 12 volt battery is the most common reason a Renault Trafic III (X82, 2014–2021) won’t crank — a dead click, dim lights, nothing on the dash. The battery sits in the engine compartment, so it’s easy to reach for a jump-start. Here is the safe order for jump leads or a jump pack.

Before You Start

  • Park the donor car close but not touching, both vehicles’ ignitions off, handbrakes on, in neutral or park.
  • Use good-quality jump leads or a lithium jump pack rated for a diesel.
  • The Trafic’s battery is in the engine bay — open the bonnet and locate the positive (+) and negative (−) terminals.
  • Keep leads clear of the belt, fan and hot parts.

Jump-Start With Leads

  1. Connect the red lead to the flat battery’s positive (+) terminal on the Trafic.
  2. Connect the other end of the red lead to the donor battery’s positive (+).
  3. Connect the black lead to the donor battery’s negative (−).
  4. Connect the other end of the black lead to a solid, unpainted metal earth point on the Trafic’s engine — a bracket or lifting eye, away from the flat battery. Don’t clamp it to the flat battery’s negative terminal; earthing to the engine keeps any spark away from battery gases.
  5. Start the donor car and let it run for a few minutes to put some charge across.
  6. Start the Trafic. If it doesn’t fire, wait a couple more minutes and try again rather than cranking on and on.
  7. With the Trafic running, remove the leads in reverse order: the earth point on the Trafic first, then the donor negative, then both positives.
  8. Drive for 20–30 minutes (or leave it running) so the alternator recharges the battery.

Using a jump pack instead: connect its positive clamp to the battery positive and its negative clamp to the same engine earth point, then follow the pack’s instructions and start the van.

After a Jump-Start

If the battery had gone completely flat, the van may lose its clock and radio settings, and the electric windows and tyre-pressure system can need re-initialising — run the windows fully up to reset one-touch, and let the TPMS relearn over a short drive. If the engine dies as soon as you disconnect, or the battery is flat again next morning, the battery is likely at the end of its life or there’s a charging/drain fault to check.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the battery on a Renault Trafic?

In the engine compartment. Open the bonnet to reach the positive and negative terminals for a jump-start or a battery change.

Where do I connect the negative jump lead?

To a clean, unpainted metal earth point on the Trafic’s engine — a bracket or lifting eye — not to the flat battery’s negative terminal. Earthing to the engine keeps the connection spark away from the battery.

Can I bump-start (push-start) a Trafic?

Only manual vans, and it isn’t recommended on a modern common-rail diesel — a proper jump-start is safer and kinder to the van. Automatic versions can’t be push-started at all.

Why does my Trafic battery keep going flat?

Usually an ageing battery that no longer holds charge, a lot of short stop-start trips, or a parasitic drain (a light or module staying awake). If a fresh jump won’t hold overnight, have the battery and charging system tested.

Is this the same on the Fiat Talento, Nissan NV300 and Vauxhall Vivaro?

Yes — same X82 platform and engine-bay battery, so the jump-start method is identical.

If a warning light stayed on after the jump-start, look up the code on autodtcs.com. To clear the service reminder after any battery work, see our Trafic service indicator reset guide.
