The Škoda Octavia (Mk3, type 5E, 2013–2020) uses an electromechanical electronic parking brake (EPB) on most automatic and higher-trim cars, with a small switch marked “P” on the centre console in place of a handbrake lever. Before you change the rear brake pads the caliper pistons have to be wound fully back, and on this VAG platform that has to be done electronically. Be honest with yourself up front: there is no owner button-press trick that retracts the calipers on the Octavia 5E — you need a diagnostic tool that can command the EPB into service mode.
What service mode does and why you need a tool
Each rear caliper on the Octavia 5E has a small electric motor and a spindle that drives the piston out to clamp the disc. Because the piston is screw-driven, it will not simply push back like a front caliper. Service mode (sometimes shown as “start lining change mode”) commands those motors to spin the spindles fully back, parking the pistons in their retracted position and stopping the EPB from re-clamping while the car is in the air. The standard route is VCDS or ODIS, but a cheap generic OBD EPB tool (OBDeleven, Carista, Foxwell and similar) handles this job perfectly on the 5E.
Retracting the calipers
- Park on level ground, chock the front wheels and select P (DSG) or first gear (manual) with the engine off.
- Connect a battery charger/maintainer — the EPB module is very sensitive to low voltage and will abort the routine if the battery dips.
- Switch the ignition ON (do not start the engine) and turn Auto Hold off if your car has it, so the system does not fight the procedure.
- Plug the OBD tool into the port below the steering column and open the parking-brake / EPB service function (in VCDS, address 53 – Parking Brake, Basic Settings; on app-based tools, the “Brake pad replacement” or “Open caliper” routine).
- Start the routine. You will hear both rear motors wind back for around 20 seconds; wait until the tool reports the action complete.
- Switch off and disconnect. The calipers are now retracted — lift the car, remove the wheels and change the pads.
Critical: never force the pistons back by hand
On an EPB caliper the piston is moved by the internal spindle motor, not by hydraulic pressure alone. Never push the piston back with a G-clamp and never use a piston-wind tool. Forcing it mechanically against the motor will strip the spindle, wreck the actuator gearbox or shear the motor — turning a pad change into a caliper replacement. Retract electronically only, using the service-mode routine above.
Exiting service mode and bedding in
With the new pads fitted and the wheels back on, reconnect the OBD tool, ignition ON, and run the matching “close caliper” / reset step (in VCDS, the same Basic Settings group; on app tools, the reset and function-test channels). You will hear the motors drive the pistons back out to clamp. Then start the engine and apply and release the EPB two or three times, confirming the warning lamp behaves normally. Finally bed the pads in: make 8–10 gentle stops from about 30–40 mph with cooling gaps, and avoid hard braking for the first 100–200 miles.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does every Octavia Mk3 have an electronic parking brake? No. Some early and base manual cars use a conventional handbrake lever. If you have a lever between the seats this procedure does not apply — the EPB cars have a small “P” switch on the centre console instead.
Can I change the rear pads without any tool? Not safely on the 5E. Unlike some non-VAG cars, Škoda did not give the Octavia an owner button-only service mode, so you need VCDS, ODIS or a generic OBD EPB tool to retract and reset the calipers.
Will a cheap generic EPB tool work, or do I need VCDS? A budget OBD tool with an EPB / brake-pad-replacement function works fine on the Octavia 5E. VCDS and ODIS simply give you the dealer-level menu; the result is the same retract-and-reset cycle.
Do I have to switch Auto Hold off first? Yes, turn Auto Hold off before you start so it cannot interfere, and leave the ignition on but the engine stopped while the routine runs.
The EPB warning light stays on after the job — what now? Usually the close/reset step did not complete. Re-run the reset routine and cycle the EPB; if a fault stays stored, scan for codes before driving.
If a warning light or stored fault code appears during the job, you can look up what it means on autodtcs.com.
