Home/Skoda/Octavia/Mk3 (5E) 2013-2020/Reset a Frozen Infotainment Screen

Reset a Frozen Infotainment Screen

These instructions apply to the Skoda Octavia Mk3 (5E) 2013-2020. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 12, 2026

If the touchscreen in your Škoda Octavia (Mk3, 5E, 2013–2020) has frozen, gone black, or stopped responding to taps, you can force a reboot yourself in well under a minute — no tools and no trip to the dealer.

Which system is in your Octavia 5E

The third-generation Octavia ran the VW Group MIB (and later MIB2 / MIB2.5) infotainment. Depending on trim you have Swing, Bolero, Amundsen, or the top Columbus unit. They differ in screen size and navigation, but every one of them is rebooted the same way: by holding the round volume/power knob beside the display. A black screen, a frozen map, or a head unit stuck on the ŠKODA splash logo is almost always a software lock-up, not a failed screen.

Soft reset (reboot) the screen

Do this parked, ignition on, so the unit stays powered.

  1. Find the rotary volume/power knob — on the 5E it sits to the right of the screen (Swing/Bolero) or bottom-left (Columbus), and doubles as the on/off control.
  2. Press and hold it. Keep holding past the point where the audio mutes.
  3. After about 10–15 seconds the screen goes black and the ŠKODA logo appears.
  4. Release the knob and wait 30–60 seconds for the home screen to reload. Touch and audio should return.

Safe — no data loss

The knob-hold reboot is the equivalent of restarting a phone. It does not erase radio presets, navigation favourites, paired phones, or any settings. The unit simply reloads its software, so you can do it as often as you need.

If it stays frozen

  • Hold longer. If 15 seconds did nothing, try again and hold the knob for up to 30 seconds.
  • Let it sleep. Switch the ignition off, lock the car with the key, and walk away for about five minutes so the electronics power down fully; then unlock and restart.
  • Check for a software update. Older 5E MIB2 builds had known map and Bluetooth glitches; a dealer or a USB update from Škoda’s update portal can refresh the firmware.
  • Pull the fuse (last resort). If nothing else works, removing the infotainment fuse for about 10 seconds force-cuts power. Check the fuse chart in your handbook first.

Factory reset (erases data)

A factory reset is separate from the reboot and only worth doing if you are selling the car or chasing a deep, persistent glitch. On the 5E it lives under Menu → Settings (or System) → Factory settings. It erases presets, paired phones, and saved destinations, so only do it deliberately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the reset knob on the Octavia Mk3?

It is the round volume knob next to the screen — the same one you turn for volume and press to switch the audio on and off. Hold it in to reboot.

Will I lose my saved radio stations?

No. The knob-hold reboot keeps presets, navigation favourites, and paired phones. Only a deliberate factory reset from the menu clears them.

My Bolero is stuck on the ŠKODA logo — what now?

That is a classic MIB software hang. Hold the volume knob for 15 seconds; if it still loops, let the car sleep for five minutes, then reboot again. A firmware update cures persistent splash-screen freezes.

Is it safe to drive with the screen frozen?

Yes. The infotainment unit is independent of the engine and driving systems — you only lose audio, Bluetooth, and navigation. Reboot when you are safely parked.

Do I have Swing, Bolero, Amundsen, or Columbus?

Swing has a small non-glass screen, Bolero an 8-inch glass display, Amundsen adds navigation, and Columbus is the 9.2-inch top unit with a hard drive. All four reboot with the volume-knob hold.

If a warning light or fault message stays on the dash after the reboot, the car may have stored a diagnostic trouble code — you can look it up on autodtcs.com.
