If the gear selector on your automatic (DSG) Skoda Superb Mk3 (3V, 2015–present) won’t move out of P — typically with a flat battery or an electrical fault, so you can’t roll the car onto a trailer or out of the way — there’s a simple mechanical override next to the gear lever. This guide shows the cabin procedure. It’s the only park-release an owner should do; anything deeper is workshop work.

When You Need This

The DSG normally releases P electronically when you press the brake with the ignition on. If the 12 V battery is flat or the shift-lock won’t energise, the lever stays locked in P. The manual override frees it so the car can be moved or recovered.

Getting Ready

  • Apply the parking brake or chock the wheels — once out of P the car can roll.
  • Work on level ground if possible.

How to Release P on the Superb Mk3 DSG

  1. Remove the gear-lever cover/trim around the base of the selector (it unclips — ease it up gently).
  2. Depress the brake pedal and keep the parking brake applied.
  3. Press and hold the locking device (the small release tab/lever exposed beside the selector mechanism).
  4. While holding it, move the gear lever out of ‘P’ into N.
  5. If it doesn’t release first time, repeat the press-and-move.
  6. With the car in N and the parking brake/chocks still in place, it can now be rolled or recovered. Refit the trim afterwards.

Important

This override only frees the selector — it does not mean the car is safe to drive. If the battery was flat, recharge/replace it and check the gearbox selects normally before driving. If P won’t release even with the override, stop and call recovery rather than forcing it.

Why won’t my Superb come out of Park?

Almost always a flat 12 V battery or a shift-lock fault, so the electronic release can’t energise. The manual override beside the selector frees it.

Is this safe to do myself?

Yes — it’s the cabin override Skoda provides. Just apply the parking brake or chock the wheels first, because the car can roll once out of P.

Do I need tools?

Usually just your fingers (and maybe a trim tool to lift the cover). No dismantling under the bonnet — that’s a workshop job, not this.

The lever still won’t move — now what?

Don’t force it. Recharge the battery first; if it still won’t release, have it recovered to a workshop.
