When the keyless remote on a second-generation Impreza (GD saloon / GG wagon, 2000–2007) loses range or its LED stops lighting, the coin cell inside has run down. It is a quick change — but note the GD/GG remote uses a CR1620 cell, which is smaller and thinner than the CR2032 many other cars use, so check you have the right one.
Replace the battery
- Remove the screw on the remote and split the case open at the seam.
- Lift out the old CR1620 cell.
- Before touching the new battery, discharge any static electricity from yourself — touch a bare metal part of a building or the car. The transmitter’s circuit board is static-sensitive.
- Fit the new CR1620 cell (or equivalent), observing the same orientation as the old one.
- Reassemble the case in reverse order and refit the screw.
If the remote still doesn’t work
The GD/GG Impreza does not use a button-press re-sync after a battery change. If the remote does not operate the locks once the new cell is in, the transmitter code may need to be re-registered to the car through the registration connectors behind the driver’s sill trim — see our Impreza keyless-remote registration guide. Remember the car stores up to three remotes.
Frequently asked questions
What battery does the GD/GG Impreza remote use? A CR1620 coin cell — not the more common CR2032. Fitting the wrong size is a frequent reason a “new” battery seems not to work.
Do I have to re-programme the remote after changing the battery? Usually not — the code lives in the car, not the remote. If it stops responding, re-register it through the registration connectors as above.
Why did you mention static electricity? The remote’s circuit board can be damaged by a static discharge; touching earthed metal first protects it while the case is open.
